- Personal Message
- I am a Cambridge graduate who fell into teaching and now would love to do it full time! Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a student make progress over the course of several weeks, and even a single lesson.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- My degree subject was music, and I'm a singer and pianist, so I teach music theory (up to and beyond grade 8) to musicians of all instruments and practical skills to beginner pianists (up to grade 5) and beginner to intermediate singers (up to grade 8).
I also teach maths, French and sciences. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a BA Hons in Music (CANTAB), A-levels in French, Maths, Music, Theatre Studies and General Studies (all grade A), and the equivalent of 15 GCSEs (10As and 5 A*s). I also have a DipABRSM in voice.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- In terms of voice, I held a choral award at Sidney Sussex, performed in many other choirs, have given professional solo recitals and performed in musicals and operettas. Over the past 4 years my singing has taken me on tour to America, Italy, France, Germany and Spain, and I have been broadcast on live radio (BBC radio 3, and a solo on BBC radio 4's Daily Service) and television (among other things on a recent BBC documentary about Elgar). I have experience of all kinds of singing, from classical to musical to jazz to pop and rock, and am not only happy to help people achieve TG or ABRSM grades, but also would enjoy tutoring adults and children for auditions and shows.
My degree was very theoretical in nature, so I hold the equivalent of an LMusTCL from Trinity-Guildhall.
In terms of one-to-one tutoring, I have taught maths to year 6 and year 10 students, English to year 1 and year 6s, and music to year 1 and year 4s.
In terms of other teaching experience, over the past few years I have created and directed several small choral ensembles, from a madrigal group at college to a jazz a cappella choir at university. In all these situations I teach during the rehearsal - whether it be correct singing technique or how to grasp a tricky rhythm - to ensure that the group can understand the music and perform it to the best of their ability. During university I also used to informally 'teach' friends topics (as they would do to me) in order to revise or share a new concept. Sometimes this teaching would be in the form of an academic discussion, and at others would be more like a mini-lecture and answering questions. At the moment I'm teaching my mother (a singer with a shaky grasp of theory) about the wonders of compound time.
I also gave a drama workshop to pupils at my college after I left, and helped critique and improve other student' monologues whilst I was a student there, so I have experience of teaching the theatrical side of things, too. - How much do you charge?
- If you book in a block of 10 lessons and are flexible about timings then I can give you a discounted rate of 10%. If my travel time to you is more then 30 minutes each way then I will charge another £5 (so it's £5 for that hour of travelling I do).
- Where do you teach?
- I teach at the student's home as mine is being done up at the moment and it's a bit hazardous! I'm based in Heywood, but am happy to travel to Bury, Rochdale, and to the centre of Bolton. I rely on public transport most of the time, so if you're a little further out but you're on a bus route then get in touch and I'll see what it's like. I'm generally willing to travel up to 40 minutes each way, but if you're having a longer session (perhaps of two subjects, one after the other) or have more than one child in the house to teach in one night, then I'm willing to go further.
- When are you available?
- At the moment I'm available most evenings. In the school holidays I'm happy to do daytime tutoring as well.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach from age 7 up, and go up to degree level for music.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I prepare my students for SATs, GCSEs, A Levels and ABRSM Music Exams. I could also teach Trinity music exams if the student wanted to do less 'classical' repertoire.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes. It is dated from November 2011 and is signed by the Dean of Manchester Cathedral. I'm happy to bring it with me for inspection at the first lesson.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I've found that skype is a good way to tutor online, as I can send you across documents and interact with you almost as I would if at your home. If you're keen to try this, we could set up a trial lesson for twenty minutes or so to see how it goes. Payment for these sessions is usually by bank transfer or cheque in the post.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied voice with Sue Water, Dr Joseph Dawson and Veronica Campbell, and piano and theory with Dr Joseph Dawson.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I have an 8-year old piano student who learns astonishingly quickly - at the start of the first lesson she didn't know what a stave or a crotchet was, and by the end of the hour she was writing down her own little tune! It just goes to show how being engaged in a one-to-one lesson can stimulate incredible progress, and I'm very proud of her.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- You know when you hear your parents or other such grown-ups talking about how they wished they had kept up with piano or tried harder at maths or learnt to sing? Well, here's your chance to make sure you never end up saying that stuff! I try and make things as fun as possible (I've been told I make even mental maths enjoyable) so go pester your mum and dad and we'll see what we can do!
