- I'm a friendly tutor with a passion for literature - please get in touch if you need help.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I offer tuition in English language and literature up to GCSE level (mostly working with the 14-16 age group). At AS/A2 level, I prefer teaching English literature because this is where my expertise lies. Having said that, I do have basic knowledge of English language AS/A2 courses (and am currently working with 2 students taking the AQA English Language B AS/A2). I am also very happy to tutor at university level for English Literature, and/or offer tuition to adults who want to improve their writing style. I do not offer EFL tuition.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a BA (Hons) degree in English Language and Literature from Oxford University. I have four A levels at A grade, in English Literature, History, Art and History of Art. I also have 10 GCSEs, all at A*, A and B grade.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been a private tutor for three years. As a graduate, I worked for Oxford University Admissions Office, delivering a programme of ‘Aspiration Days’ designed to encourage and inspire school pupils to aim high. Previous teaching experience includes mentoring Year 8 pupils, and working for one year in a secondary school as an Academic Coach, tutoring students at risk of underachieving at GCSE level in English Language and Literature. In 2011, I was employed by a local school to work with small groups of C/D borderline English students in Year 11, a position funded through the 'Aim Higher' scheme.
- How much do you charge?
- My prices are above.
- Where do you teach?
- I live in Central Worthing and host sessions in my flat. If you are willing to travel to me, that would be much appreciated (I am expecting my first baby in December, so travel is difficult at present). In 2012, once home life with a new baby is more settled, I will be willing to travel to students' houses again.
- When are you available?
- I am available during the week, Monday - Friday, AM, PM or early evening. I don't teach at weekends, although I am still contactable and happy to undertake editing work at this time (e.g. proofreading essays). I always work through school holidays, as this is often a good time for students to 'catch up' or improve their work.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- My experience really lies in working with students at GCSE and A level; however, I am enthusiastic and passionate about English and am always willing to work with a pupil who wants to improve in the subject. My particular passion is for literature, so I really enjoy analysing texts, or helping pupils "unlock" a novel, or Shakespeare play, or poetry. However, I am interested in all aspects of the subject and very happy to teach those who want to learn.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- GCSE, AS and A2 level.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I am CRB certified and am more than happy to show you certification upon first meeting.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- For online tuition, I use both conversational and written guidance (a combination of Skype and email contact).
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- In the 2010-11 academic year, I tutored a wide range of GCSE students, who all met or exceeded their target grades. Many had been getting C/D grades when they first began tuition, but ended up with A or B grades at GCSE, which I was thrilled about. I also tutored two A2 English literature students who achieved A and B grades at A2 level, and are now at university. Lastly, one of my students studying the Cambridge Pre-U achieved an A* in English literature and secured his place at Oxford, as did another A2 English literature student who I helped prepare for the Oxford ELAT English test and interview process.
This year, I am teaching a home educated group on Monday mornings, several Year 10 and 11 GCSE students (all studying the AQA English Lang/Lit GCSE syllabus), and 3 AS/A2 students. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- I am friendly, patient, approachable person who enjoys tutoring. I get immense pleasure from reading and writing and would like to help you to achieve your best in your English studies – and perhaps even exceed your own expectations.
