Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics at KS3, GCSE and A-Level.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold:
First Class first year M.Chem. chemistry degree at the University of Durham;
5 Grade A 'A' Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Business;
10 Grade A* GCSEs.
I received an offer from the University of Oxford, but came to Durham on deciding to read chemistry;
Silver award in the British Mathematical Olympiad;
Young Chemical Engineer of the year award.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have 4 years of experience tutoring in schools in Chemistry and Maths at all levels. I also taught Mathematics in Italy for a year on my gap year.
How much do you charge?
My rates begin at £15 per hour (see subjects taught section) plus £1 extra per hour if paid by cheque.
Where do you teach?
I am currently located in central Durham and I can travel to a student's home if more convenient for them, or can easily have the tuition at my house.
When are you available?
I am available on most days of the week, including weekends. Evenings are probably best, but remain flexible.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
The age range I wish to teach is 13-18, so from KS3 to GCSE to 'A' Level.
Do you have a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
The Royal Society of Chemistry.
Tell me about some of your current students.
My students currently have a wide range of abilities and goals they wish to achieve, all with different learning styles.
I have an A-level Chemistry student aiming for a C who finds this subject conceptually difficult, so I make it more graphical to make it easier to understand. I've been tutoring this student for 2 months now.
Conversely, a Maths GCSE student I am tutoring seems to learn by thoroughly understanding the concepts, so we are looking at proofs and being more rigorous.
Do you have a personal message for students?
You will find me very approachable and friendly, while my approach to tuition is to also make it as fun as possible (which it can be!). I offer a warm, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere in which to learn. I believe a student cannot be forced to learn or be made to concentrate on something; they must see for themselves that the subject they are learning is both interesting and enriching, (which I have been told I make tuition both of those) then that is the key in having the desire to learn. Having a bond with the student is also thoroughly important and will allow your brain to relax and concentrate more on the subject.
Whatever your ability of learning style, I offer clear and concise tutoring that will simply help you understand your subject more. Having done my GCSEs and A-levels not too long ago, I know the syllabuses very well and know exactly what you need to know. In terms of passing exams, I have a very good track record.
