Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
Cello and Early Years Music.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied cello at the Royal Northern College of Music with Eduardo Vassallo (principal cello CBSO) and then later studied privately with Tim Hugh (principal cello LSO). I have also recently started a part-time Masters in Music Therapy to increase my skills in teaching children with additional needs and those in challenging circumstances.

As well as teaching I perform freelance with a number of different orchestras including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Queenspark Sinfonia and the New English Chamber Orchestra.

I am also trained in British Sign Language.

What kind of experience do you have?
I have experience in teaching children individually as well as in groups of up to 30 ranging from age 3-18 and some including those with additional needs and some adults.

How much do you charge?
Lessons are £35 per hour, however young children and beginners only need 30mins which is £17.

Children attending Suzuki cello tuition will receive an individual lesson each week and a group lesson every couple of weeks.

An extra £5 charge will be made for travel unless there are several students in your area that I teach.

Where do you teach?
I have a lovely teaching studio at home but will travel if I can fit it in to my schedule.

When are you available?
I make a regular time for students each week.

Lessons during the day are also available for those not attending school.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I will teach children from age 3 up but will also teach adults. Beginners to Advanced.

I specialise in young children and those with additional needs. (Deaf, Blind, SEN, SLD)

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
As I teach Suzuki I do not aim for exams however if a student wishes to take an exam I encourage them to sit Trinity Guildhall or ABRSM.

Suzuki students have the opportunity to 'graduate' at certain levels if they wish to submit recordings.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes and a Child Protection Training Certificate

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
British Suzuki Institute,
European String Teachers Association

Where and with whom did you train?
Tim Hugh (principal cello LSO)
Eduardo Vassallo (principal cello CBSO)
Karine Georgian
Susan Blake

Masterclasses with Ralph Kirshbaum, Emma Ferrand, Bernard Gregor-Smith

Tell me about some of your current students.
My student range from age 3 to 40 but all have one thing in common- they love playing cello and making music!

Do you have a personal message for students?
Lets play cello!
