First lesson free! If you want fun, inspiration and great results then look no further. I am a professional freelance cellist with over 12 years experience teaching cello to all levels and all ages, as well as coaching chamber groups and orchestras.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach cello from beginner to professional level, coach chamber music and music theory. I teach privately and currently teach cello for Southwark Music Service.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA (Credit in Performance) from the Royal Northern College of Music and a PG Diploma in Solo and Ensemble Performance (Distinction) from the Royal College of Music.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching for over 12 years and have extensive experience teaching both individually and in groups. I teach at all levels from beginner to professional, children and adults and have taught both in the UK and abroad. I specialise in 'ergo-dynamics' - developing a relaxed and well supported technique, and remedial technique with a big emphasis on fun!
My teaching credits include 5 years with Berkshire Maestros (Music Centre and local LEA schools), Bexley Academy of Music and the Performing Arts, Blackheath High School, and Prendergast School in Brockley. I also taught in Trinidad and Tobago for 3 years and was offered the position of Cello Professor with the University of the West Indies in 2011. Whilst in Trinidad I also coached the Trinidad and Tobago Youth Orchestra, Saint Augustine Chamber Orchestra and gave masterclasses and outreach workshops throughout Trinidad and Tobago with the Savannah Quartet. I was very proud that one of my student's was offered a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston USA.
I have experience teaching children with special needs and am a very patient and friendly teacher.
How much do you charge?
My first lesson is free (30 mins)! Come along and see how you like the cello and me and I guarantee you'll come back!
I charge 35 pounds an hour (for individual lessons) and 20 pounds for 30 minutes. 45 mins can also be arranged on request.
Where do you teach?
I teach at my home in Sydenham/Forest Hill which has excellent transport links and free off road parking. I am also willing to travel to students homes on request providing it is within easy reach of public transport.
When are you available?
My performing career is very flexible so I am available to teach on weekdays up until 9pm. I can also be available at weekends on request.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from age 6 upwards and teach all levels from beginner right up to professional level.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am happy to prepare students for exams but am equally happy to just teach for enjoyment without any pressure. I prepare students for both Trinity Guildhall and ABRSM exams and auditions for music schools, music colleges and music courses.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I am fully CRB checked.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Musicians Union
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained first at Wells Cathedral School with Ioan Davies (Fitzwilliam Quartet) and then with Hannah Roberts at the Royal Northern College of Music. I then completed my studies with Steven Doane and Margaret Moncrieff at the Royal College of Music.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I love playing the cello which is why I am still doing it after 30 years! And I love sharing my experience and knowledge. Teaching is a passion of mine and I get a real kick out of helping a budding musician develop. I've had an amazingly diverse and interesting life with my 'other half' and if you want to too then come along and see what it's all about!
