Tell me about your qualifications.
I read Music through an instrumental scholarship at Royal Holloway, University of London, achieving a 1st class honours degree (2005-2008) before going on to study 'cello at the Royal College of Music, London, for a Master's in Performance (2009-2011).
What kind of experience do you have?
Having spent my formative years at the Gloucester Academy of Music I started teaching as early as 16 with young beginners aged 5 and above. After 8 years of private teaching my enthusiasm for teaching younger years remains strong, although I have found teaching adults can also be very rewarding for both parties, so I will happily at any age.
I have 2 years experience of teaching whole-class lessons in primary school and also at the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department using a similar approach in both; encouraging lots of singing and a strong sense of rhythm to aid their technical development.
My playing experience continues to evolve in many directions; I am lucky to have enjoyed working with many orchestras, cruise ships, touring with dance companies, recording in session for the likes of Manic Street Preachers, musicals, performing at the BBC Proms... Life as a musician is very varied and (usually) inspiring!
How much do you charge?
Free consultation lessons, always. It is important teacher and pupil are well matched and I expect students may be wary of learning before they meet 'teacher'.
For most cases I charge £35/hour for travelling to pupils' houses (depending on the length of travel). I can also teach from home at a reduced rate of £30/hour, or £20/half hour. If wish to 'buddy up' with a friend and take joint lessons this will be reduced further.
Where do you teach?
My home is in Camberwell, less than 10 minutes walk from Oval tube station. Surrounding areas of Kennington, Vauxhall, Stockwell, Clapham, Brixton, are all close by, and I can travel further afield as well (I have a number of students in West London, for example).
I teach from home mostly on Mondays and Wednesdays.
When are you available?
My schedule is quite varied so it helps to be flexible when booking lessons, but I will endeavour to keep lessons as regular as possible.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all years from age 5+ (I wouldn't recommend a child start cello before this age)
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Incorporated Society of Musicians
Where and with whom did you train?
I studied with Amanda Truelove at the Royal College of Music (2005-2011) and gained masterclasses from Johannes Goritzki, Tim Hugh, Susan Monks and Julian Lloyd Webber.
