- Personal Message
- Your progress, understanding and enjoyment are my mission.
Study with me - I won't let you down! - Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach cello and composition, and am also happy to coach chamber music.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a Masters of Music from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and a Bachelors of Music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. Both of these are in cello. Additionally, I have an Endorsement in String Teaching from the RSAMD, and was also the winner of the Violoncello Challenge Prize and the Dinah Wolfe Memorial Award for Composition while I studied there.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been teaching for the past six years, through RSAMD Musicworks and my own private class. Primarily I have been teaching cello; but I have also had to teach all other string instruments and musicianship, and conduct school string orchestras.
- How much do you charge?
- The first consultation lesson is free. After that, I charge £30 pounds per hour, and offer a 10% discount for advance block bookings of six lessons. Additionally, I offer a free lesson to any student who successfully recommends me to another person for lessons.
- Where do you teach?
- I have a fantastic teaching room in my house in the Acton / Ealing area of West London, but am also willing to travel around London - it is always a question of what is the most convenient arrangement for all involved. Be aware that I may charge an additional £5 if I have to travel too far to teach, but this can be negotiated.
- When are you available?
- I have a very flexible schedule, and spend most of my time in London - so a solution for timetabling lessons can almost always be found.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- Over the years, my the ages of my students have ranged from 6-50s, and the level has ranged from complete beginner to ABRSM Grade 8.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- A CRB disclosure is being carried out at the time of writing. I also have a fairly recent Disclosure Scotland certificate.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- Where employed, online tutoring will come as a reinforcement for lessons where both parties are present.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I have been a member of the European String Teachers' Association for the past five years, and a member of PRS for about the same amount of time.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied cello at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Richard Lester and Alexander Baillie, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Robert Irvine and Myra Chahin, and privately with William Conway. Additionally, I studied composition at the RSAMD with David Fennessy and J Simon van Der Walt.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- Some of my current students include:
- A seven year old boy, the father of whom is a professional opera singer
- A singer and composer of experimental ambient music, who chose to start learning cello later in life
- An eleven year old girl, who began through Wider Opportunities and decided to switch to one-to-one tuition - Do you have a personal message for students?
- With optimism, perseverance, care and enjoyment, anyone can be amazing!
