- Personal Message
- I'm a 22 year old Royal Academy of Music student living in North West London, ready to share my love of music with anyone I teach, and create a great teacher/pupil relationship with my students.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I am a fourth year French Horn student at the Royal Academy of Music, and I also passed my grade 8 piano with distinction at age 14, so I'm able to teach beginners to advanced of both instruments, and have experience in teaching both. I also can teach music theory, aural, and I can accompany my brass students on the piano (to a basic standard) which will help in lessons.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- Currently studying for BMus (and predicted a 1st) Full Scholarship at Royal Academy of Music (Leverhulme Mentorship Scheme) A Levels: AAA GCSEs: 10 A*-A level ABRSM Grade 8 Piano (Distinction) 2004
- What kind of experience do you have?
- In terms of teaching experience, I have taught the piano since I was 16 years old to a variety of different people at different stages. I have taught the french horn during my last four years at music college. I have vast personal experience with performance. I was the winner of the Royal Academy of Music Dennis Brain Horn Prize in my second year of study, and the John Solomon Brass Prize in my third year. In my freelancing career I have worked with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Nash Ensemble, London Sinfonietta, London Chamber Orchestra, English Sinfonia, and Royal Scottish National Orchestra. I am in both a successful brass and wind quintet, with recitals across the UK. I passed my ABRSM Grade 8 piano with distinction in 2004, and performed solo recitals and competitions up until 2008, where I stopped my personal practice and playing to focus on the french horn at music college.
- How much do you charge?
- £30 an hour (£15 for 30 minutes). If I am travelling outside of Zone 2 then I will have to add this to my rate, as I already have a Zones 1-2 monthly travelcard.
- Where do you teach?
- I travel to students' homes. I live in Willesden Green, so anywhere within easy reach on the Jubilee or Metropolitan line is ideal (Kilburn/ Cricklewood/ West Hampstead/ Finchley Road/ Neasden/ Dollis Hill/ Wembley Park/ Preston Road). Or anywhere in North West London is easily accessible by bus (Queen's Park/ Maida Vale/ Kensal Green/ Brondesbury/ Hampstead). However as I study at the Royal Academy of Music, which is in Baker Street, this means I can travel to most places across London in Zone 2. As previously mentioned, travel outside of zone 2 will add a small extra charge as I only have a travel card for zones 1-2.
- When are you available?
- Weekends are the best times, as I am busy at Academy during the week. However, afternoons and evenings will usually work (sometimes if I have projects throughout the week I will need some flexibility as I can have 6-9pm rehearsals.). We can find a regular time each week, and if I have to change the time of a lesson I will always be flexible to find a replacement time that suits.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- All ages, and all levels.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I am flexible to work for whatever the student would like to; I often found working towards ABRSM exams a bit limiting and boring when I was younger, but I'm happy to do this and try and inject a bit of fun into learning so the exams seem less daunting.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- No as I have never had a job that requires it to be checked, but I am willing to obtain one at students' request.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied the piano with Anna Markland (previous winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year) at Aylesbury Music Centre, before learning with Graham Caskie at the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department. I studied french horn with Simon De Souza at jRAM, before gaining a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where I study under Michael Thompson, Richard Watkins and Martin Owen (all of whom are regarded as some of the finest players in the UK, and even the world).
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- I'm looking forward to sharing my love of music with you, and finding fun ways to teach so that you enjoy learning as much as I did.
