Duncan Strachan Cello Teacher (West London)

Duncan Strachan Gold Member

Personal Message
I am passionate about playing and teaching the cello. Whether my students are keen to develop into professionals, or just to play as a fun pastime, I am committed and enthusiastic about helping them achieve their musical goals.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Primarily I teach cello, though I am also an experienced piano teacher and chamber music coach. I can also teach Music as an academic subject, both history and theory, and with a wide range of composition experience (including writing scores for some award-winning films), I teach composition too.
Tell me about your qualifications.
• Initially, I trained at St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh, Scotland's specialist music school, where from an early age I was trained at a very high level. As well as Grade 8 Distinction in Cello and Piano, I have A Level in Music and 5 SQA Highers at A Grades from my time there.
• I read Music at St Catherine's College, Oxford, where I was both a Leask Music Scholar and an Academic Scholar. I graduated in 2009 with a 'Double' First Class Honours. I was honoured to receive one of the highest performance grades in the University's history, and was also awarded with the Smith Music Prize.
• In 2009 I moved to Glasgow, to continue my cello studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I graduated in 2011 with a Masters degree (Distinction). I was awarded numerous prizes and awards during this time, and upon completing my studies was invited to become a 'Young Artist in Residence' at the Conservatoire, and subsequently invited to become a member of the teaching staff there.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching cello professionally since 2011, although I gained a great deal of teaching experience throughout my studies prior to that. I have experience of teaching all ages and levels, from pre-school age to adults, and from complete beginners to postgraduate students, and continue enjoy teaching both privately and within institutions UK-wide.

I'm a deputy cello tutor on the teaching staff at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and have taught regularly there since graduating in 2011. I am also the cello tutor for students at Glasgow University. For two and a half years I was Lower Strings Tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's outreach scheme, MusicWorks, in Bathgate, West Lothian.

I also really enjoy working with adult learners and amateurs. I teach adult students privately and have also taught on the Allcomers Strings course as part of the CoMA International Summer School, where I taught alongside members of the Fidelio Trio and composer Michael Finnissy, among others.

As a performer, I play across the UK on a regular freelance basis as a soloist, chamber and orchestral cellist. I have performed Haydn, Schumann, Elgar concertos as well as numerous new commissions for cello and orchestra, and working with composers to create something new is something I love doing. I play cello with the Maxwell Quartet, and have worked with classical musicians including Benjamin Grosvenor, David Watkin, Red Note Ensemble, Fidelio Trio, and non-classical musicians and bands including Admiral Fallow, Owen Pallett, Four Tet and Jarvis Cocker.
How much do you charge?
My hourly rate is £40.00. I charge £32.50 for a 45-minute lesson and £25.00 for a 30-minute lesson. I am very happy to give a free, no-obligation trial lesson to any student who is trying to decide upon a teacher that suits them best.
Where do you teach?
I prefer to teach from my home in West London which is well set up for cello lessons, but it is also possible for me to travel to you, particularly if in the West London area, such as Maida Vale, Kilburn, Westbourne Park, Notting Hill, and so on.
When are you available?
My timetable varies from week to week, but I am keen to be flexible and to fit the needs of my students. I am happy to teach at evenings and weekends, and during school holidays.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and levels, and welcome beginners and advanced students equally.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I currently have the Scottish equivalent, having recently moved to London.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
If preferred, I can tutor online via the medium of email or Skype, as appropriate.
Where and with whom did you train?
I began learning cello (Suzuki method) with Audrey Scott, where I grew up in the west highlands of Scotland. My teacher at St Mary's Music School was Pat Hair. I studied with Colin Carr whilst at Oxford, and Robert Irvine at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Other teachers I have had lessons and masterclasses with over the years include:
Haflidi Hallgrimsson, Alasdair Tait, William Conway, David Watkin, Johannes Goritzki, David Strange, Emma Ferrand, Heidi Litschauer, Lionel Handy, Lawrence Dreyfus, Pal Banda.
My composition teachers have included: Tom David Wilson, James MacMillan, Guy Newbury, and Rory Boyle.
Tell me about some of your current students.
One of my advanced, higher-education students has recently made some major breakthroughs with tension, particularly in her left arm and manifesting itself in a rather strained sound. Through experimenting with all sorts of different methods (playing barefoot, squashball in hand, saying 'aah' while playing etc) we have managed to make a real breakthrough. It is so rewarding both for teacher and student when this kind of exploration pays off!

I teach another student at her home in West London, which just happens to be a canal boat! I set her targets every week which she works very hard to meet. People often talk about one of the drawbacks of learning cello to be its size and portability, but this student has taught me that where there is a will, there is a way!
Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe learning to play the cello has benefits that aren't just musical. It can have a wonderful impact on all aspects of our lives. So stay focused, stay positive, and watch & listen to as many cellists as you can - it will all sink in in ways you wouldn't even realise!
