- Personal Message
- I am 47 years old, and married with two children of secondary school age. I run my own company providing technical consultancy services in thermal systems and energy-efficiency. I particularly enjoy presenting seminars on technical concepts to non-technical people. I offer tutoring as a way of sharing my enthusiasm for maths and technical subjects with others.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering topics, Excel and Powerpoint.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- MA, Cambridge University.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been a part-time professional tutor since 2006, and have taught over 50 students since then, mostly on extended courses leading to exams. I am currently completing a Diploma in Teaching for the Life-Long Learning Sector (leading to Qualified Teacher Status). I have experience teaching international students and business professionals.
- How much do you charge?
- Free initial induction lesson. Lesson fees typically £30 per hour. Travel costs 50p per mile.
- Where do you teach?
- Usually from home in South Shropshire. I am also prepared to travel to students' homes for extended lessons (2 hours or more), for example to Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Bishops Castle, Much Wenlock, Bridgnorth, Church Stretton, Leominster, Hereford, Knighton and Presteigne.
- When are you available?
- Daytime and evenings Monday to Friday throughout the year.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- Mainly students in Further Education (16+) and Higher Education (including adult students). Secondary age students by special arrangement.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- Mostly A levels and degree level work. Also, adult numeracy for higher education. Preparation for scholarship exams by arrangement.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes (2010).
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I offer a service where a student sends me questions by email. I prepare detailed worked solutions to the questions and notes for the student's reference. I also provide written critiques to a student's own worked solutions sent by email.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Institute of Chemical Engineers, Association of Christian Teachers.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- For the past few years I have greatly benefited from mentoring in my teaching career by a lecturer in education who is also an accredited counsellor and supervisor.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I taught my most recent student this summer. He was retaking a critical Maths module in his university engineering course. In the autumn term I am looking forward to working on A level Maths with a student who first came to me for GCSE Science tuition. The student did not originally plan to take Maths at this level but her natural affinity for the subject became clear during our GCSE work.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- My principle is summed up as "Solving a problem simply means representing it so as to make the solution transparent" (H A Simon). I aim to give students the confidence to take ownership of their own learning, and provide them with the techniques to do themselves justice in exams.
