Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English (language and literature) at all levels including University and maths up to 13+. I have a great deal of experience teaching English GCSE and A Level and so I am familiar with the syllabus specifications and set texts for most exam boards. I specialise in the 11+ and 13+ examinations for entrance to secondary schools, and also am able to teach Verbal and Non Verbal reasoning for these. I am also experienced at coaching for University entrance including sessions to help students writing that tricky Personal Statement!
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA honours degree in English Literature (upper second class, 2.1) from Cambridge University, where I am also an academic scholar. I have 4 As at A level (English, history, French and theatre studies) and 10 A*s at GCSE (including English language and literature and maths). I have been tutoring privately for many years and have been certified by several independent agencies.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been tutoring privately for many years and have been certified by several independent agencies. I have taught a huge variety of students at all levels and of all abilities, and from all walks of life. I am familiar with most 11+ and 13+ entrance specifications, and with the English syllabus for GCSE and A Level, having prepared many students for these exams. Many of my students have improved their grades by two or three grade boundaries and achieved entry to top London schools (including some who have won scholarships) at 11+ and 13+. I can provide excellent references. Above all I seek to provide each student with a tailored experience that matches their individual needs and weaknesses.
How much do you charge?
I charge £30 per hour (or £25 per hour for early years education - Key Stage 1 or younger). If I travel to a student's home outside the immediate Crouch End area I charge an extra £5 travel fee per session.
Where do you teach?
I teach several of my students from my own home in Crouch End. I am also able to travel, particularly if you are local or live nearby in North London. I teach in Muswell Hill, East Finchley, Highgate, Finsbury Park and Turnpike Lane. Travel to other areas of London is negotiable.
When are you available?
I am currently available during weekdays and weekday evenings, particularly after school (4-7pm). I am available to tutor at any time of day during school holidays.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and all levels up to University.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for key stage examinations, 11+ and 13+ exams, GCSE, A Level and degree.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes, but it was issued when I first started teaching and so is out of date.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I am extremely approachable, reliable and flexible and offer a highly tailored service to suit each student's individual needs, weak areas and pace. Above all I seek to build up my students' confidence and help them to them feel thoroughly prepared and relaxed about all aspects of their academic work, whether they are preparing for a particular exam or simply building their academic strength.
