- Personal Message
- I especially enjoy teaching students on a one to one basis. The teaching is entirely student responsive, and there is often a wider range of approaches than are available in a class or in mainstream education. Results can be spectacular.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- * I teach English to foreign students or those just just wanting to improve their English. I am able to teach both one to one and in groups or a combination of both. I also provide proof reading services to school and university students, as well as reasearch work for publishing companies. * I tutor school age pupils towards the 11+, 13+, GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level exams. I work a lot with 9 and 10 year olds on creative writing techniques as a slow-burn approach towards the Common Entrance exam. I've had a 100% success rate with the C.E.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a Level 4 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) from International House, London. This is certified by the University of Cambridge. I also have a degree in English Literature.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been tutoring students in English as a Foreign Language for five years.
The first student I ever had travelled all the way from Japan to study English with me every day for four months. His project was to learn English purely with the assistance of the Harry Potter books. It was an extremely interesting, intense and slightly eccentric way to learn, but it taught me a lot about how to react to how a student responds to a stimulus.
Since then I have worked mostly freelance, however I did work for 8 months for a company providing Business English Training for employees of Romanian Gas Companies. We provided group training as well as one to one tuition in general English.
I have established connections in Germany, Japan and Russia and provided condensed one to one courses. I am currently teaching students from Japan, the Czech Republic and Brazil as well as group sessions for South Korean Consultants. I am currently preparing an Italian student for a degree level translators course. I work a lot as a proof reader on MA and Phd dissertations and as a researcher for (mainly) American writers. I have managed to combine the above with my own career as a writer.
At the same time I tutor school age pupils in preperation for exams. I have been doing this for three years. I'm often brought in as a last minute revision aid for GCSE or A-level students but I also tutor towards the Common Entrance exam. I currently have 6 long term pupils.I particularly enjoy this and I've developed a useful library of materials. I have several pupils aged 9 and 10, who I work with on creative writing and comprehension.
I've taught a poetry class to adults and helped with Drama Workshops. - How much do you charge?
- I charge £25 for an hour.
- Where do you teach?
- I live and work in Sydenham SE26. At the moment I have students in Dulwich and Sydenham but as I tend to cycle I can reach most places in South East and South West London including the boroughs of Southwark, Lewisham and Bromley. However, I am willing to travel further afield.
- When are you available?
- I am flexible but I am very busy, especially during exam season. However, I'm still able to timetable lessons around a students commitments. Available seven days a week.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all ages. The youngest pupil I've had was 3 and the oldest 64!
I am also available if a student would like guided conversational practice. I can teach writing skills or preparation for exams or job interviews. I have worked with French actors on audition practice (my wife is an actor). I have a wide variey of course materials available and the full range of text books. I teach all levels from beginners to advanced. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- 11+, 13+, G.C.S.E, A-Level, Esol and F.C.E, Degree Level dissertation editing and fact checking.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Yes
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I am available to tutor via Skype or MSN.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained with International House, Covent Garden, London.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I am working with a beginner level student who is gaining confidence after starting with 'Hello' and Goodbye'.
I have just finished proof reading an LSE International History MA dissertation.
Several long term creative writing and comprehension pupils as well as exam candidates.
An advanced student and an Intermediate level EFL student as well as a small group of consultants working on Presentation level English. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- I am friendly and reliable and a great believer in the local community. We're trying to get a local after school reading group going. Given my non-school educational background I can utilize approaches that often suit individuals more than standard class practice. I take great pride in avoiding the commute into central London!
