Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach all brass instruments (especially trombone, euphonium, tenor horn, baritone horn and tuba, but also trumpet, cornet and french horn), classical piano, theory and pop/rock singing.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I'm a recent graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, having completed my Batchelor of Music in Classical Trombone.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught brass, keyboard and singing privately in London for about 2 years, and work with the London Borough of Newham as a teacher in primary schools, teaching beginner trombonists and keyboardists in years 5 and 6.
How much do you charge?
I charge £25/hour (£15/half-hour). I will do a half-hour taster session for free if required, and can do discounts for booking a group of lessons. It's worth asking if you have any particular requests
Where do you teach?
I teach at the students' homes. Obvious areas for me to travel to are City of London, Islington, Camden, Dalston, Hackney, Shoreditch, Bow, Newham, Ilford, East London, Tower Hamlets, the Docklands, Whitechapel, London Bridge, Southwark, Bermondsey, Lambeth, and the West End, but if I can get there I will come and teach you!
When are you available?
My availability is pretty flexible. If you require a set time each week, this can easily be arranged, but I have usually found that my pupils want a more flexible timetable, which i am more than happy to provide.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I will teach brass instruments from about 7 years old. However, for singing and songwriting, I will start to teach at around 15 years old; this is to avoid causing damage to the student by pushing the voice too early. There's no upper limit to this; if you're a 98 year old wanting to start playing the euphonium for the first time, great.
I teach from any level to any level for brass, and up to grade 6/7 piano. I am an experienced player, having completed my degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, but teach from complete beginners, covering technique as well as how to read music.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare my students for ABRSM grades for trombone, brass, classical piano and theory. I teach using the Rockschool syllabus for pop/rock singing.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I have an up-to-date Enhanced Disclosure certificate.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Online tutoring would take the form of emailing me scanned-in or recorded answers to questions I'd set, or my answering questions asked. I prefer to teach one-to-one, at least now and then.
Where and with whom did you train?
I have recently graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I studied with Simon Wills, John Kenny, Chris Houlding and Eric Crees. I studied classical piano with Margaret Bennet and Dr. Paul Fugler.
