- Hi there!
Just get in touch for a chat about how I can help you learn any aspect of music tuition. I can help you whether you are an absolute beginner flute player or a diploma flute student. - Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach flute lessons, piccolo lessons and music theory lessons. However, I am principal of Roundhay Music www.roundhaymusic.org and can arrange for tuition on any aspect of music tuition and to whatever standard.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- Graduate in Music from Huddersfield University (G.Mus.) where I studied for 3 years
Licentiate Performers Diploma from Trinity College of Music, London (L.T.C.L.) on Flute
Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Flute Studies from Royal Academy of Music where I studied for 2 years - What kind of experience do you have?
- I have experience in all sectors of education teaching mainly flute:
State sectors have included Flute teacher for South West Herts Music Service and Leeds City Council Artforms. Coached woodwind on SW Herts Orchestral Course.
Private sectors include appointments as Flute Tutor at Watford School for Girls and Ackworth Day/Boarding School in Pontefract, which also has a preparatory school. Other work in preparatory schools include Richmond House and Moorlands schools in Leeds.
My work in higher and further education establishments have included Harrogate Technical College and Barnsley College where I was asked to devise a syllabus for the flute students on the performers course.
As far as playing is concerned, I have done all manner of performing from the premier of Penderecki's Trio in London and chamber ensemble engagements as part of the Cheltenham Festival, to solo recitals with guitarists, pianists, oboists, accordionists, singers (most recently with Opera North soloists for charity events) and freelance orchestral gigs, including Orchestra D'amici (made up of players from all the major professional orchestras in the North) .
I am also Principal and Partner in a Not-For-Profit tuition organisation based in Leeds called Roundhay Music, which was established in 1987 and where I teach flute, piccolo and music theory during the day and in the evenings. - How much do you charge?
- I charge a fee of £30.64 per hour and this is 'pro rata', so a 1/2hour lesson is £15.32 and a 3/4hour lesson is £22.98 etc. If you are an advanced student who has taken Grade 8, I charge £37.28 but I do offer a reduction to those who are pensioned or out of work. Lessons can also be spread out by prior arrangement.
Students and parents can discuss at a consultation lesson what is best for them and what suits their pocket. Tuition is given on an individual basis and lessons can be on a fortnightly or weekly basis, or as often as you would like. If you would like chamber music coaching, then the hourly fee is split equally between the members of the group.
If you cannot make your pre arranged lesson time, all I ask is that you give me at least 24 hours notice, so that it gives me time to swap students around to fit you in when it is convenient for both of us either in that week or the following week. - Where do you teach?
- I teach from my studios in Roundhay, Leeds LS8 1AB. If you require lessons in your home, that can easily be arranged.
- When are you available?
- I am available at any time. Just ask and I can usually find a way to fit you in and if not I am confident Roundhay Music will find you a qualified and experienced flute teacher who can!
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach flute at all levels and to all standards. My youngest student is 7 years old and my oldest is 87 years old!
I love to teach any ability from absolute beginner to L.R.S.M. performing diploma standard. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I prepare students for any qualifications they want to study for. You tell me which syllabus you want to study from and I will teach you it!
BUT..... I also teach some of my pupils who just want to learn without the pressure of examinations. - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have an up to date CRB enhanced disclosure dated from 2011.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am a member of the British Flute Society and the Musicians' Union.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained at Huddersfield University with John Barrow (Manchester Camerata) for 3 years. Then with Sebastian Bell (London Sinfonietta) and piccolo with Richard Taylor (London Symphony Orchestra). I have attended master classes given by Geoffrey Gilbert and William Bennett.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- My youngest is a girl of 7 years and she has just begun. She is just big enough to reach a full sized instrument!
My oldest is 87 years old and started recently, having gone out and bought an instrument and then thought he needed some tuition!
I have lots of students of all ages. One adult student has started from scratch a few months ago and making great progress. She is already approaching Grade3 with no previous knowledge of music. Another student I have just started teaching is a T4 paraplegic adult. He wasn't sure whether he would be able to take up the flute with his paralysis but there's no problem and he is doing really well and shows promise. Amongst some of my other adults who are Grade 8 or above, one has already taken a diploma. Some have been learning for many years and still love their lessons! (So I'm told!) - Do you have a personal message for students?
- Just get in touch and have a chat with me about what you would like to do. We can then set up a consultation lesson, which although payable at the time, is a no obligation lesson, where you can let me know if you want to go ahead later if you wish.
