- I am very thorough in my teaching and always aim to make each lesson fresh and enjoyable. I am very patient and tailor my lessons to the individuals aims and objectives.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach Flute playing in all styles (classical, jazz, folk etc) and music theory.
I also teach the fife to really young students as an inexpensive taster for flute playing (see this link for more details http://www.thewhistleshop.com/catalog/otherinstruments/flutesfifes/yamaha/fife.htm )
I also teach jazz, pop, soul and musical theatre singing
I am a flute specialist and not a saxophone or clarinet doubler. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- Dip ABRSM (teaching flute).
Access to Jazz.
City and Guilds 7407 teaching certificate. - What kind of experience do you have?
- 10 years teaching flute privately and 4 years teaching flute and singing peripatetically in schools. I currently teach at George Spencer School (outstanding Ofsted report) and in various schools for Derbyshire City and County Partnership and Notts Music Tuition.
Around 8 years gigging experience as a professional musician both on flute and voice. - How much do you charge?
- £25 per hour £20 for three quarters of an hour.£15 for half an hour.
Taster lessons are available for beginners who want to try before investing in a flute. For £10 a student will have the opportunity to find out whether flute playing suits them. A flute with a curved head joint is available for younger students who aren't big enough for a full sized flute.
I also teach really young students the fife as it is a very good way of introducing them to basic flute playing. - Where do you teach?
- From my home in New Basford/Sherwood (about a mile north of Nottingham city centre) close to the ring road and a bus stops for the city centre.
- When are you available?
- Week days and evenings.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- All ages starting from around 7 years old for the flute with no upper age limit and around 5 years old for the fife.
Around 9/10 for singers. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- Graded music exams, GSCE and A'level music exams. There is no pressure to take exams but I will be happy to help you work towards your grades if you wish to do so. I have 100% record with students taking exams with most students acheiving merit or distinction.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Musicians Union and The British Flute Society
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained at New College Nottingham with Ben Martin and Phil Ware on the access to jazz course and privately with Sheffield's renowned jazz and classical flautist Henrik Linneman and most recently with Nottingham most highly regarded flute teacher Viola Calthrop-Owen on my DipABRSM flute teaching diploma.
I worked on vocal technique with two wonderful teachers, Lynne Wayman and Sarah Simmonds. - Tell me about some of your current students.
- My youngest student is 5 years old and I teach her on the fife as she is too young to cope with demands of the flute. I am currently exploring the use of improvisation and composition to help bring out a more expressive style of playing in my students. One 10 year old student recently wrote a piece entitled 'Loop 2 Loop' about a rollercoaster. The piece was written in Bb and used legato and staccato, sudden dynamic contrast and tempo changes. The student wrote her composition down and as a consequence this has helped her greatly with her sight reading! I also enjoy teaching adults as they tend to be very conscientious!
I am working with some wonderful young singers helping them expand their range, try out different styles and work on their general technique and performance skills. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- Always try to enjoy where you are with your playing. Look to improve but don't constantly crave to be at a higher level or you will never enjoy where you are! It'll reflect in your sound!
