Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach classical violin and viola and Irish traditional tin-whistle, flute and fiddle.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have just finished my studys at Trinity College of Music in London. I have completed all my grade exams in music with distinction and have recently gained my LTCL diploma in teaching where I got the highest mark in my year. I have also played the violin and have taught violin for a number of years.
Originally from Ireland, I am a well established Irish traditional flute and tin-whistle player and have won and had great success in All Ireland competitions (Fleadhs) as well as completing many grade examinations and I have been teaching these instuments for many years.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught viola and violin privately from my own home for many years to adults and young people. For the last few years I have been teaching in some residential courses such as Summer Strings in N. Ireland in which I have tutored orchestras, string quartets, trios, duos etc.
I am a member of Every Child A Musician, a scheme running in the Newham borough of London. I have been appointed lead tutor of strings and so as well as providing tution to over 50 children each week, I have been responsible for the creation of the violin and viola curriculum. I also have the task of interviewing new canditates for tutor positions, observing the lessons of other tutors to a high standard and being a mentor for the pool of teachers in my string department.
I have been teaching Irish Traditional instrumental lessons from a very young age as part of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (Irish traditional music organisiation). I have taught young children, teenagers and adults on a one to one basis but also groups of up to 30 people at times. I have recently set up my own project called 'Mozart Meets St Patrick' in which I brought together young musicians from Irish traditional culture and classical music backgrounds for a weekend of workshops and combine all of their talents for an evening of classical and Irish Traditional music, song and dance with the hope that each musician would be given the opportunity to develop their skills in both genres.. The project was very sucessful as I gained the support of Down Arts Council, Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, the South Eastern and Education Library Board Music Service and over 20 of the local schools. The project was praised as being a successul cross-communtiy project and we raised lots of money for charity. I have also been nominated for the best project prize in Trinity College of Music.
I have also experience with music in early years as I have completed many placements with different early years courses including Muddy Boots early years music classes. Also having over 20 young cousins under the age of 10 I have grown up whilst teaching music to babies and toddlers all of my life.
How much do you charge?
I charge a standard fee of £25 per hour however prices are negotiable and travel expenses must be taken into account.
Where do you teach?
I live and teach in my home in Greenwich in south east London, 5 minutes walk from Greenwich train station and 2 minutes from Cutty Sark DLR station. I am also willing to discuss traveling to student homes, for example in nearby areas such as Charlton, Woolwich, Blackheath, Lewisham, Deptford, Isle of Dogs, Mudchute, Westferry, West india quays, Limehouse. Other nearby areas in London are open to discussion also please contact me for further information.
When are you available?
This is open to discussion as my time-table varies, however I have a strong passion and commitment to my teaching and so I will do everything I can to come to an arrangment to suit everyone involved.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
