View My Full Profile- Personal Message
- I am an experienced tutor based in Bolton and spent the past year teaching abroad as a volunteer. I am happy to take on students of any age or ability from KS3 upwards.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach A-Level or GCSE Biology and Chemistry , GCSE science, and Maths up to GCSE level. I also teach undergraduate level Biochemistry or related subjects.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a PhD (on the genetic and environmental determinants of systemic sclerosis) and a BSc in Biochemistry (2.1). I also have 10A* & 2A grades at GCSE, plus 4As and 1B at A-Level.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been a science and maths tutor since 2008, and have also taught science to primary after-school clubs and led practical workshops for A-level Biology students. I spent one year teaching English and science in India and the Philippines up to A Level standard. In the academic year before that, I tutored more than 20 students in the Bolton area, many of home were able to improve their marks (by up to 3 grades) and get the places they were aiming for at university. I helped both top students to achieve A* grade as well as students who were struggling to reach a pass grade. I have mostly taught students studying the AQA, OCR, Edexcel or WJEC syllabi, but am happy to teach other boards too.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £25/hr for A-Level or GCSE sciences, and £20/hr for KS3 Maths or science. I charge reasonable travel costs depending on location, which are negotiated before tutoring begins (eg cost of bus fare).
- Where do you teach?
- I do not presently have a car, so prefer to teach in my home in Little Lever, Bolton, where plenty of space is available for this purpose. If students prefer, I may be able to travel to them if you are easy to reach on public transport (if you contact me with your postcode/area I will let you know quickly whether this is possible). I aim to buy a car later in the year and will then be happy to drive to sudents' homes.
- When are you available?
- I am not currently available to take on new students due to other work commitments. Apologies!
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach secondary and sixth form students, up to GCSE or A-Level.
I am also happy to teach university level and mature students. - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes, I have an up-to-date disclosure certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I completed my BSc at the University of Warwick, and my PhD at the University of Manchester.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- I enjoyed studying science and maths at school, but I am aware that many people struggle with these subjects. I would love to be a science teacher in the future and have a lot of experience in both paid and voluntary work with children and young people. I aim to make learning a more fun and enjoyable experience, whilst aiming for the top grades.
The key to improving grades is starting early: most topics in science and maths build up from basic concepts, if you understand these from the beginning it's much easier to follow new principles than trying to make sense of it all when you start your revision.
