Which subject(s) do you teach?: Geography at A level (AS and A2) and GCSE. 11 plus and late entry exams for grammar schools, such as the 12 plus and the 13 plus. KS3: Maths, Geography and English. GCSE: Geography, Maths and English. KS2: Year 5 and 6 literacy and numeracy.
Tell me about your qualifications.: 10 'O' levels including Maths(A), two Sciences and two English subjects, 3 'A' levels including Geography(A) and Pure Mathematics(B) •Geography BSc(Hons) 2:1 •PGCE in Geography and Games •MA in English (Writing for Children)
What kind of experience do you have?: I have seen and experienced many types of academic performance over the last 21 years from high-performing grammar schools to comprehensives on ‘special measures’. I have taught pupils with statements and pupils gaining Oxbridge entrance. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility within schools, particularly in the pastoral system such as Head of Year. I have been a grade-A examiner for three years out of the last four in GCSE Geography (AQA). I have help lead A-level field trips to locations such as Denver, Prague and the Netherlands. This is my third full year as a full-time tutor. Last year 3 out 5 of my 11 plus tutees passed, as predicted. I also successfully helped one parent and child through the appeals procedure for grammar selection. Furthermore, my 12 plus tutee last year was the only girl to pass and get a place at South Wilts. I have taught numerous syllabi: in the last 3 years I have tutored AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC at A level Geography. Indeed, I taught the whole of the A2 Edexcel Geogaphy syllabus online to one a tutee in Moscow: he has now gained a place at Aston University. I have mainly tutored the AQA and Edexcel syllabi for GCSE Maths.
How much do you charge?: At this stage in the school year, lessons for Primary school pupils are £30 per hour, unless it is for the 11+, then it is £35 per hour. For the Lower School (Years 7-9) in secondary schools the rate is £33. For GCSE tuition in the Upper School (Years 10-11) it is £35 per hour. A level tuition is £40 per hour. Living in a rural area makes travel times longer, so that is reflected in my prices. Up to 15 miles I don't tend to charge a travel fee unless I have to travel through Salisbury at difficult times or have to go out of my way. Generally there are two factors in my consideration: the total time it takes me from the time I leave my house until I get back home and the mileage. I am also fully insured for public liability and indemnity as well.
Where do you teach?: I travel to student homes as far west into Dorset as Gillingham and Shaftesbury. My westward extent also extends further into Wiltshire as far as Warminster. I can also travel north and east into Hampshire as far as Andover and as far south as Downton, Ringwood or even Ferndown. My nearest towns are Salisbury and Amesbury together with many of the towns of South Wiltshire. However, much of my tuition is done in and around Salisbury. I also teach online: indeed, I taught the whole of the A2 Edexcel Geogaphy syllabus online to one a tutee in Moscow: he has now gained a place at Aston University.
When are you available?: I teach the majority of my pupils from 4-8pm but I am invariably available throughout the day as I am a full-time tutor - not just a moonlighting teacher. I am also available at holiday times for revision sessions and during Year 11's study leave.
Which ages and levels do you teach?: From ages 9 to 18.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?: 11+, 12+, GCSE and A-Level.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?: I have a full disclosure CRB check dates 19th December 2009.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.: I offer two types of ‘remote’ tuition options at the moment: i/ ONLINE FACE-TO-FACE TUITION: face-to-face on Skype is very good in dealing with syllabus issues and reinforcing and filling in the holes the class teachers leave behind. From time to time I may use Scriblink as an online whiteboard. Face-to-face tuition lends itself well to visual resources such as diagrams, maps and pictures. It is primarily discussion-based and the tutee needs to take notes as we go along. I regularly send tutees files to prepare them for the lesson and to discuss in the lesson. At the moment, I am working with one A-level tutee, face-to-face, helping him to improve his exam technique where the 40 mark essays are concerned. This is very ‘wordy’ work with few diagrams and it is only working very well because his spoken English is very good, he is self-motivated and he puts in extra work outside of class time. If a tutee comes to face-to-face tuition and expects to be spoon-fed or entertained, it just won’t work. Extra work can be set to test their written understanding. Usually it is enough to go through topics the student struggles with. Once they ‘click’ with the topic/issue, we move onto other areas. However, broadband being as it is, it is usual for calls to be ‘dropped’ several times a lesson. I live in a rural area and the connection can be unpredictable. Nevertheless, we usually ignore this and persevere. My most recent online tutee has an excellent broadband connection and we have had no interruptions to our lessons so far this year. Payment for this type of tuition is a flat fee each week to cover lesson preparation and the lesson itself. The marking of substantial pieces of work outside of lesson time such as essays will incur a marking fee; otherwise the essay will simply have to be dissected in class time. ii/ CORRESPONDENCE-STYLE WITH UNLIMITED EMAIL SUPPORT: work is set through powerpoints, pdf files and word documents for the student to do on their own in their own time. This should keep the tutee occupied for between 1-2 hours each week, unless more is required. It is then returned to me within the week. I mark it and provide feedback in the form of an audio file (up to 30 mins), talking them through the various issues. Any amounts of email conversations to help the student with this particular piece of work are allowed, after feedback has been given. This is very much an ongoing and open-ended commitment once work has been set and feedback given and the student is totally free to contact me with any issues. As a result, the payment structure is open-ended and depends on the amount of time used to source and prepare resources into workable documents as well as time to mark and give audio feedback. This is added up at the end of each week and the client is then billed. Follow-up emails and support are not timed but are considered as a ‘free’ part. Generally, depending on the suitable electronic resources I have to hand, this time will be from about 45-90 mins per week. I keep a track of the time minute to minute and endeavour to keep the time used as short as possible while setting about 1-2 hours of work. This is very much a trust system of working. I charge like this because I tailor the work individually to suit the student as opposed to an ordinary correspondence course that just covers syllabus content.

Where and with whom did you train?: I completed my PGCE in 1990 at Southampton University.
Tell me about some of your current students.: This varies from month to month. At the moment (January 2012) I have 16 tutees in total : 4 11+ tutees being prepared for the local 11+ exam this coming September, 5 tutees for GCSE Maths, 1 student for KS2 Maths and English, 1 student for KS3 English, 1 tutee for GCSE Geography, 1 tutee for GCSE English, 2 tutees for A-level Geography and 1 tutee for KS3 Geography.
