I have worked in Education since 1987, working for the London Boroughs of Havering and Barking and Dagenham. Initially, I taught English as a Second Language, followed by adult Literacy and Numeracy, teaching maths up to GCSE level. This often involved working with adults with dyslexia and dyscalculia, which encouraged me to learn a variety of approaches to help students who found the subjects challenging. These skills have been very useful to me when supporting Kumon students and assisting them to reach their full potential.
Later in my career I was involved in a Family Numeracy programme. I taught in local schools working with children and explaining to adults the teaching methods being used. I also ran classes to help some of the adults improve their own maths skills. This experience has helped me to understand some of the difficulties the students encounter with their school work and how Kumon can help them to overcome such problems. I also appreciate how Kumon study supports students within the national curriculum.
Promotion led me to a situation where I was running an education satellite college. I found, however, that I missed my involvement with teaching, so in 2002 I trained as a Kumon Instructor, opening the Hornchurch Centre in February 2003. With the assistance of my husband we have founded a well-established centre which continues to thrive and benefit the local community.
This has been a very fulfilling experience and has given us the pleasure and satisfaction of helping children of all abilities achieve their potential and improve their confidence and ability to study effectively by using the Kumon method.
Our centre offers students a safe and friendly environment, staffed almost entirely by adults. All staff are CRB checked on a regular basis. We have an excellent team of helpers, three of whom work as teaching assistants in local schools and they support the younger students with their learning experience.
Over the years, we have been able to develop a deeper understanding of students of all ages and abilities, observing how well students progress with Kumon. Many of our students are working at advanced levels (Gold, Silver and Bronze Advanced Student Roll) and we have nurtured students to complete the Kumon programme in both English and maths.
