- A holistic approach to music-making is key: aural and theory are used to develop rounded flute playing, and importance is placed on context, and seeing beyond the score! Lessons are fun and informal; come just the once, or as often as you like.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the flute; all standards welcome. I also teach academic music (and can do the two side-by-side).
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a first class degree in Music from the University of Cambridge. I also have a postgraduate degree from the Royal Academy of Music.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I began my professional career working as principal flute in the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and am now a busy freelance player, and am invited to play guest principal with major orchestras at home and abroad, including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as solo appearances at major international music festivals, and concerto performances with orchestras including the London Mozart Players. I appear regularly on radio, television, and have recorded with a wide range of artists, from opera to musichall. I performed for James Galway's 60th Birthday concert, and for Her Majesty The Queen at Windsor Castle as part of her 80th birthday celebrations. I have coached the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, and given classes at home and abroad.
- How much do you charge?
- Flute tuition:
£35 p/h
You're welcome to come for a free consultation lesson if you are thinking of taking lessons. - Where do you teach?
- I teach in The Warren Room, at All Flutes Plus (www.thewarrenroom.co.uk), a very short walk from Warren Street Station. I can also travel to students' homes if that doesn't work. I can also teach from my house in Sydenham, although preference is for the previous two options.
- When are you available?
- I have a flexible timetable, and can find times that suit the student best. This allows freedom for both my students and myself. Should a student wish to change a lesson time, then this is no problem as long as 24 hours' notice is given.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- All ages, all standards!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I can prepare students for graded exams and auditions.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied with Celia Chambers, then with Michael Cox, Karen Jones, William Bennett and Patricia Morris at the Royal Academy of Music.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Enjoy what you are doing. If you don't enjoy it, then you're not doing it right! Find out how you want to play, and make it your goal to play like that. To find out how you would like to play, listen to recordings and concerts. Don't just hear music, listen to it, and react to it - be brave enough to dislike things as well as like them. Then take the bits that made you go wow - this may be something as slight as the way someone played a single, beautiful top note - and when you are at home practising, try to see if you can copy what you heard. I only really started playing properly when I started listening to myself with critical ears, and started taking different aspects of the playing of the world's greatest musicians, who can be found performing every night on our doorstep here in London! Don't just think that this need be limited to 'classical' music either. Beauty is in the eye, and ear, of the beholder, and the ultimate aim of music lessons it to equip the student with the technical facility to express their own version of beauty and brilliance. Don't wait to be told how to be imaginative, as you may be waiting a very long time!
