I am genuinely interested in my students' progress and am committed to helping them succeed.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
A-Level English Literature, English Language, English Language & Literature IB: Higher and Standard Levels GCSE: English Language, English Literature I teach all exam board specifications: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and WJEC I work individually and with small groups.
Tell me about your qualifications.
PGCE, Institute of Education, University of London MA American Studies, University of Sussex BA( Hons) English Literature and European Thought & Literature, Anglia Ruskin University
What kind of experience do you have?
I trained at the Institute of Education and enjoyed a successful teaching practice at City & Islington Sixth Form College in London - both rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. At City & Islington I taught OCR A-Level English Literature. Edexcel English Language & Literature, International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level, and AQA GCSE English. I am now a private tutor specialising in A-Level, IB and GCSE for all exam boards. My students have significantly improved their skills and have done better than the grades predicted for them at school or college. I bring the full weight of twelve years of working in the press and public relations industry to my teaching. I was a copywriter for a range of audiences, from developing awareness campaigns to drafting crisis management strategies. I line managed press officers to improve their writing skills and develop their confidence. A background in working with journalists is ideal for supporting students with English language assignments.
How much do you charge?
A-Level - £45 per hour GCSE - £35 per hour IB - £45 per hour
Where do you teach?
In North London and surrounding areas. I teach at home or at the student's house. There is a reasonable travel charge for going to a student's home.
When are you available?
I am available from Monday to Friday including evenings, and at weekends, depending upon my timetable.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I support students to gain good grades at A-Level, IB and GCSE, for entrance to university, sixth form college, vocational training or work. I specialise in teaching students aged 14-19 but am happy to work with younger people and adults. I support students who are struggling to understand texts or write to standard. I also work with students who are aiming for an A*grade and require challenging tasks. By the end of the first lesson, I will have a clear understanding of the student's learning needs so that we can agree on how best to continue together. With my support, students motivate themselves to be creative and disciplined. Students of all abilities usually discover that they actually enjoy analysing texts and working with language. They are then equipped to meet the exam board assessment objectives and get good grades. With twelve years’ experience of copywriting in the public relations industry, I can guide students to write effective UCAS statements and other applications.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE, A-Level, International Baccalaureate, 11 Plus.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
My CRB certificate is now out of date and I am in the process of getting a new DBS certificate.
Where and with whom did you train?
Institute of Education, University of London.
Tell me about some of your current students.
Holly is academically very able but was demotivated because she could not apply the language requirements of the AS Edexcel English Language & Literature specification to her set text. She wished she had chosen A-Level English Literature instead. We worked together on identifying and analysing narrative techniques in order to write meaningful answers to essay questions. We also worked on the spoken word unit to establish what the paper was expecting. Holly wrote to me, “I got an A in my coursework and a B for my exam. Thank you so much, I don't think I would have been able to get these grades without your help." When Laurice read back her college essays for A2 AQA English Literature, she realised that what she had written did not make sense and did not express her opinions. We worked together on ideas and structure in the texts for the ‘Elements of Gothic’ paper. Laurice surprised herself by writing increasingly interesting and coherent essays. She says, “Louise is a truly talented and helpful tutor. She guided me well in using quotations, sentence structure and composing a well-formed argument. She was dedicated to helping me and was also very patient. I went from a Grade D in A2 exam to a Grade B at resit. I am now enjoying university.” Izabella’s school predicted a D/E grade for GCSE. With tuition in the AQA English Literature 'Moon on the Tide' poetry unit, she gained an A* for that paper, B for the set texts unit, bringing her overall grade up to a B. She is now at the sixth form college of her choice. Duncan disliked English and was struggling to reach pass standard. With tuition, he gained a C grade in WJEC GCSE English and is now doing a BTEC Level 2 in Creative Media Production in London. He says, "Louise helped me to answer a question well. She also helped me improve my grammar and gave me confidence so that I could get the grade and get on the course of my choice.”
Do you have a personal message for students?
My aim is to support you to do well in exams in order to achieve your aims for the present and the future. During your time with me, I hope you will gain an understanding of the pleasure that good reading and writing can offer. Knowing how to express yourself is a skill that brings rewards beyond the limits of the exam system.
