Brian Kirkby Jazz Piano Teacher (Exeter)

Contact Me View My Full Profile
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach the Piano, Keyboard, Trumpet and Music Theory.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have thirty two years experience as a professional musician, fifteen of those freelance, including: EMI's premier feature band, international residencies, band leader, touring shows, cabaret and ship work, fourteen years as the pianist for AJ's Big Band.
After being asked to join Devon's music service, I have had ten years of up-to-date INSET training covering the requirements of peripatetic work in schools.
How much do you charge?
My lessons are usually 30 mins, for which I charge £12.50.
Where do you teach?
I teach at my home in Exeter.
When are you available?
Lessons are available from 4.30pm until 7.30pm weekdays in school term time.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach beginners to Grade 8, and the performance side of the Piano Diploma. However, many of my pupils play purely for pleasure and play very well.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes. It is a requirement for the peripatetic work I do in schools.
Tell me about some of your current students.
In 2005 one of my piano students gained entry to what is widely considered the top Conservatoire in Europe, the only student in Devon to achieve this. Neither of us knew when he started with me, some ten years previously, that this is where he wished to end up. The quality of the teaching was such that when he made his mind up that this was the career path he wanted to pursue, he was able to gain entry to a most prestigious school of further education.

Currently one of my top students has recently passed Grade 8 with merit, aged fifteen, giving him his first 'A' Level. We have now embarked on studying for the Diploma, a post Grade 8 qualification, a formidable task for a seventeen year old.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Please feel free to come along and try out a lesson with me without any obligation to continue.
