Learn to sing in fun and healthy way with an experienced professional singer! All ages and levels are welcome.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach singing to all ages and all levels. Although my specialty is classical music, I am happy to work on any style of music (musical theatre, classical, pop) with my students. The goal is to learn to sing in a healthy way, to use your voice to its full potential, and to have fun! I also teach musicianship and ear training.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a classically trained soprano with nine years of professional performance experience in the United Kingdom and abroad. I have a Masters of Music in Advanced Vocal Performance (Distinction) from the Royal College of Music as well as a Licentiate of Music (Outstanding Distinction) and a Bachelor of Music (Distinction) both from McGill University in Canada. I also have four years of private teaching experience.
What kind of experience do you have?
About my career as a performing soprano (you can always find the most up to date performance information on my website):

Canadian soprano Sarah Barnes began her musical career as a trumpet player, receiving a BMus in trumpet performance from McGill University (Montreal, Canada). Switching her focus to vocal studies in her early twenties, Sarah went on to attain a LMus in voice from the same institution and has recently completed a MMus at the Royal College of Music in London with Russell Smythe.

Sarah has performed as a soloist and recitalist throughout North America, the UK, and Europe with performances at Kings Place, the Snape Maltings, London Handel Festival, Tage Alte Musik Regensburg, San Francisco Early Music Society, Boston Early Music Festival, Festival Montreal Baroque, the Banff Centre, and Faster Than Sound (Aldeburgh Festival). She has recorded as a soloist for the Canadian label ATMA Classique, receiving critical acclaim for her performance on the album Heu Fortuna with Ensemble La Rota. Sarah (with pianist Andrea Marie Baiocchi) was recently a finalist in the 2009 Nadia and Lili Boulanger International Voice-Piano Competition in Paris.

Sarah's recent career highlights include Haydn's Harmoniemesse with the Britten-Pears Orchestra and Antonello Manacorda in the Snape Maltings, premiering a new staging of Messiaen's song cycle 'Harawi' in association with the American Opera Theatre, Solo and Chorus Ragazza in 'Linda da Chamounix' for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Cio-Cio San in a chamber adaptation of Madama Butterfly (Puccini/Nelson) in Sardinia, and a recital of Handel opera arias and duets with Laurence Cummings and The Little Baroque Company at L'Escorial, Spain.

In 2008, 2009 and 2010 Sarah was a Britten-Pears Young Artist, singing the role of Josabeth in Handel's Athalia with Richard Egarr, and participating in masterclasses with Sir Thomas Allen, Ann Murray,
Ian Partridge, and Christian Gerhaher.

Equally at home on the concert and opera stage, Sarah enjoys performing a varied repertoire from early opera, to song recital, and the creation of new works.
How much do you charge?
My fee depends on whether I travel to the student or the student comes to me. For a lesson in my Loughton studio (near Loughton tube station) I charge £30.00/hr or £20.00/half-hr. I do travel to some students, but the fee is adjusted accordingly, usually £35.00/hr with a minimum of one hour. Group lessons are also possibe- please get in touch if you would like more information.
Where do you teach?
I usually teach in my Loughton (Essex) home which is near Loughton tube station on the Central Line (Epping Branch). It is very easily reached from East London, Stratford, Epping, Woodford, Buckhurst Hill, Debden, Leytonstone, Enfield, Hainault, West Essex. I sometimes travel to students, although this can be more difficult to arrange.
When are you available?
I am currently accepting new students on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons/evenings. Other times may be possible - please contact me if you are interested in another day or time.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages from children to adults. However, I generally will not take students under the age of nine or ten. This can depend on the child and I will look at it on a case by case basis. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss lessons for a younger child.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
No.
Where and with whom did you train?
I have a Masters of Music in Advanced Vocal Performance (Distinction) from the Royal College of Music in London, a Licentiate of Music in Vocal Performance (Outstanding Distinction) from McGill University in Canada, and a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance (High Distinction) also from McGill University in Canada.
Tell me about some of your current students.
My current students range from eight years old to seventy years old, and have a very wide range of abilities and interests. Some are complete beginners while others have their own performing careers underway (and everything in between, of course!). I always teach my students using music that they enjoy, whether it be classical, jazz, musical theatre or pop music.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Singing is great fun! Many people think about singing lessons but are too shy or think they aren't good enough. To those people, I say: Come try it out! Everyone can learn to sing!
