Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach all the valved brass instruments, specialising on trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn. I also teach piano, bass guitar and musical theory.
I frequently play in a variety of styles so I am at home teaching both classical, jazz, or more popular styles.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated from Sheffield University with a bachelors in music in 2010 and am currently working toward a masters in music. My masters course focuses on solo performance and research, culminating in a thesis about trumpet technique.
I obtained grade 8 trumpet in 2005.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have gained vast orchestral experience from playing in university orchestras. I lead the trumpet sections of both the wind and symphony orchestras during my final year of university. I also play jazz, both in a big band, and small ensemble setting and have taken part in a number of competitions. I currently hold the lead trumpet chair in the Sheffield university Jazz Orchestra.
I have been playing on the Sheffield music scene for a number of years as well and have had the privilege of playing regularly with many bands in the area, including the Renegade Brass Band and Jungle Lion.
I have been teaching since I started university in 2007. I began by working part time for a local music service, this has now branched out to private tuition.
How much do you charge?
I charge £20 for hour long lessons and £15 for half-hour lessons. An additional fee would be charged if I had to travel outside of Sheffield.
I am willing to teach group lessons at a reduced rate.
First lesson is always free.
Where do you teach?
I normally teach at home, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire but depending on the distance I am willing to travel to a students' house.
When are you available?
I am available to teach throughout the day and most early evenings.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach any age and experience; whether you are an experienced player looking to improve specific aspects of your playing, or a complete beginner!
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I will aim to tailor my teaching to you, the pupil, so that together we can work to achieve your goals. Having been through the ABRSM grading system I am well versed on how to prepare for these exams, both classical and jazz.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I hold an up-to-date CRB disclosure certificate.
Where and with whom did you train?
At school I was taught by Hugh Davies.
Whilst at university I was taught by Ken Brown, trumpeter of the Halle Orchestra.
Tell me about some of your current students.
My students are of all ages and all abilities.
I have an eleven year student who has recently passed his grade 2 ABRSM exam.
I also teach older students, two of which are interested in learning how to play jazz and improvise effectively.
