Mobile trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn tutor.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn. Jazz, improvisation, classical, or other styles. I specialize in Jazz improvisation.
Tell me about your qualifications.
Grade 8 trumpet, grade 5 music theory, BMus degree, 2.1
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching the trumpet for five years, both privately and through agencies and schools. I teach through the Musico agency and at the North London Music Centre, which has given me the chance to teach students of all ages, from seven to sixty. I teach students with many different requirements, from complete beginners to experienced players looking to improve their technique, or to learn more about approaching jazz improvisation.

Each student has different requirements and different interests, and I will tailor my teaching methods to you. I teach in a very participatory way, by example, focusing on playing together with the student. I like to put things in a wider musical context, focusing on how to approach playing different styles, with reference to their development and some theory, rather than learning by rote. Whilst I am classically trained, my speciality is jazz and improvisation, and I teach this through ear training methods like chord and scale recognition, combined with swapping phrases and riffs with the student, which can be inspiring for both participants. I also run a local jazz jam session, and I encourage my students to come and play on stage.

I am also a working musician, and I play in various jazz ensembles, function bands, and world music ensembles. I am always learning more about playing, and finding ways to pass this onto my students.
How much do you charge?
1 hour, £25
Half hour, £12.50
Where do you teach?
I am based in New Cross, South East London, but will consider travelling within London.
When are you available?
My teaching days are Monday to Thursday
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Young beginners, older beginners... to much more advanced players.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I often teach students working towards grades, and am familiar with the requirements for each grade up to grade 8.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Musicians Union
Where and with whom did you train?
I studied the trumpet starting in primary school, and went on to play with the City of Hull Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Alf Stephenson, as well as achieving grade 8. I then did a music technology degree, but kept up with playing and studied with Steve Waterman of Trinity College of Music. I have been playing professionally for the last three years.
Tell me about some of your current students.
One of my long time students is a 35 year old architect, who is learning jazz trumpet in his spare time. I have witnessed his pitch and rhythm perception improve dramatically through intensive duet practice and improvisation, and he now produces a great sound on the instrument, so he is shaping up to be a very nice player.

Another is a ten year old girl, who also has grade 6 piano. She achieved a merit for grade two within three months of starting to play.
