View My Full Profile- Personal Message
- I am a dedicated teacher, passionate about enabling my pupils. My busy calendar as a musician and my Cambridge English degree support my teaching work, but the unique experience of the individual pupil is at the heart of it.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the violin, English language and literature, 11+ examination skills, and academic music and music theory.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a degree in English from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge (Class 2.1), and am currently studying for my master's degree in violin performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (formerly Trinity College of Music). I have three A grades at A-level (English, Music and French) and an A at AS-level (Fine Art). I have eight A*s at GCSE, including one of the top five marks in the UK for English Literature.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I enjoy tutoring privately as well as working with schools. My current ongoing tutoring relationships cover the fields of academic study and violin playing. Alongside my private tutoring, I tutor for the prestigious private education company Bruton Lloyd. Having spent a year as a Graduate Music Assistant at Wells Cathedral School, a specialist music school, I have wide experience of working with young people, supervising practice, taking rehearsals, and assisting with high-calibre instrumental teaching, alongside teaching the violin one-to-one. I taught aural skills in preparation for ABRSM exam aural tests, and taught music theory both individually and in a class setting. I also prepared and chaired seminars for sixth-form English students, exploring Shakespeare's Othello, Chaucer's Pardoner's Tale, and Webster's The Duchess of Malfi. I currently chair online seminars for the literary forum Peripeteia. As a musician, I have performed with artists and ensembles including Margaret Faultless, Steven Devine, Richard Egarr, Jonathan Manson, David Miller, Pavlo Beznosiuk, the Music for Awhile Orchestra, Amadé Players, Exon Baroque Players, Dei Gratia, Collegium Musicum, and Joglaresa (playing the vielle); at the London Handel Festival and Spitalfields Festival, winning praise for playing with 'lovely gaiety' (Daily Telegraph); and live on BBC Radio 3's 'In Tune'. I give regular recitals with my duo with pianist James Fraser-Andrews and the Keats Quartet; my ensemble Stile Moderno explores the connections between folk and baroque music. I have sung with Caius College Choir and the Old Royal Naval College Chapel Choir. All this personal experience informs my love of the subjects I teach, but is less important than what my pupils experience when engaging with a subject. You as an individual are at the centre of my tutoring.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £30 per hour for my teaching, with £20 for half-hour lessons (which sometimes works best for young children's violin lessons). Depending on the distance I need to travel I may need to factor in travel expenses.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach both in students' homes and at my home in Blackheath. My location makes me an ideal tutor and violin teacher for Greenwich, Blackheath, Lewisham, Charlton, Deptford, Dulwich and Southwark, with South-West London and East London an easy journey away. However, my tutoring also takes me to West and North London as well as to neighbouring counties such as Surrey and Kent. As my family home is in Glastonbury, Somerset, I am sometimes able to tutor in Somerset for intensive short periods during holiday times. We can discuss whether tuition at your home or my home is best for you.
- When are you available?
- Tuition times are flexible; we can discuss together the best time for you. I am available term-time and school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach the violin to all ages and stages, from total beginners to advanced players, children and adult learners. Everyone is welcome, regardless of ability. I teach English at all ages to undergraduate level, and music up to sixth-form level. I enjoy helping children prepare creatively for KS2 English and 11+ examinations. I also offer help with essay-writing technique and university interview preparation. Every pupil and situation is unique, and I tailor my approach entirely to the individual, so do get in touch to discuss the ways in which I can assist you in your own learning goals.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I prepare violin students for grade exams, when that is right for them; performing exams are useful in providing a goal to work towards but should not become the primary motivation for learning. I prepare students for ABRSM music theory examinations. In English, I assist students in preparation for qualifications up to university level, including 11+, GCSE and sixth-form level examinations such as A-level. In Music, I teach up to sixth-form level. In my academic tutoring, I am very conscious that a family will often decide to tutor with a specific exam in mind. I take this investment by the family extremely seriously, and will start by producing, in consultation with you, an individual plan of action based on the syllabus and the student's strengths and areas for development. My aim is to provide targeted exam-focused work whilst fully utilising the potential for private tutoring to explore a subject further than narrow school-based teaching often can, and develop the student's experience and understanding as an individual in a way that is valuable and meaningful for them beyond the immediate pressures of examinations.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- I have an enhanced CRB certificate, dated September 2010.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I do teach by telephone, Skype, and email, when distance makes face-to-face lessons difficult. We can discuss your individual needs together.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- At Trinity Laban, I study the modern violin with the renowned violin professor Diana Cummings and the baroque violin with Walter Reiter, leader of the orchestra of The Sixteen and principal with The English Concert. I previously studied with Mark Knight and Patricia Noall. All this means that I have been rigorously taught, and have inherited the teaching of some of the great violin pedagogues including Galamian and Flesch, which I am now passing on myself. I use this to ensure that my pupils learn to play with ease and freedom from day one, without the tension problems that, sadly, one often sees in violin students. My supervisors at Cambridge included Professor Helen Cooper, N.K. Sugimura, Dr Jason Scott-Warren and Jeremy Prynne.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I have a number of violin students; the youngest is 6 and the eldest is an adult learner who fits in our lessons around his busy career. One of my pupils I visit for lessons in both violin and English; she's preparing for her 11+ exam, so we do lots of enjoyable, focused work on comprehension, reasoning and creative writing. I have a pupil who is preparing for her A-level English this year, and several GCSE English students. A diverse and lovely group of people!
Update, October 2012 - I currently have my maximum number of students, so for now I'm making myself 'unavailable' for contact. I'll be back on as soon as I have some space! Thank you. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- Yes! You are a totally unique and special person, and my job is simply to bring that out and help you discover what's in you, whether it's you as a musician or as a person engaging with literature and working with the fascinating study of language. Your own imagination, ideas, emotions, and capacity for independent thought are vital. It's fun and exciting! Believe in yourself, work hard, and enjoy yourself. Good luck!
