Personal Message
I am a semi-retired teacher with experience of some 20 years in total in general education of which about 8 years as a tutor teaching on a one to one basis. I have lived in England since 1971 and have completed my teacher training at an English University. I have spent some years in the Netherlands where I'm also qualified to teach English as a Foreign Language. I have taught English to a variety of foreign students at a University in the Netherlands as well as privately at home. In England I taught as a class teacher and a special needs teacher. I have been a year coordinator in a local Middle School for many years. Although officially retired, I do enjoy teaching and thus would like to continue sharing my expertise/knowledge with my prospective students.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Maths Upper KS 2, Dutch as a Foreign Language, English KS2/3 and English as a Foreign Language.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have English teaching Qualifications (B.Ed honours) as well as the TEFL qualification.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught English at Middle School age and lower Upper school age for about 15 years. A few years ago I moved abroad where I taught English at a Grammar School and at the language centre of Wageningen University. At this university English was the main language as most students at this university came from countries other than the Netherlands. I also trained teachers to teach English to their pupils.
In addition, I have experience in translating Dutch into English and when working with University students and Lecturers I have edited their work/ theses and policies.
How much do you charge?
I charge 20 pounds per hour for individual lessons, but am willing to negotiate a fee for a slightly larger group. Travelling expenses would be added where appropriate. Short courses could be available too. Fees for editing is negotiable and charges for translation work would be 11p per word.
Where do you teach?
I can teach at home, but am also willing to travel, but would need to charge travel expenses. Translation work can be done online.
When are you available?
Most days or evenings.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have taught English to pupils of all ages. School age from 9 years old while English as a Foreign Language was taught to students of all ages (from 7 to 65 years old).
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
To be discussed with students .
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the General Teaching Council in England and the NASUWT
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained to be a teacher in England and gained Bachelor status. My TEFL course was an internet based training programme and included teaching English as a Foreign Language to young children, businesses and small as well as large groups. I have done a variety of County Inset Courses to keep me update with the requirements in English teaching.
Tell me about some of your current students.
At the moment I'm teaching pupils with Special Needs. In addition I teach several foreign students who want to improve their English: a Swiss student, a Japanese student and a company director of a recruiting agency in the Netherlands who wants to improve his Business English. We concentrate on all aspect of the English language such as grammar, pronunciation, idioms, other vocabulary, but also cultural aspects of England. I teach a year 5 student in preparation for either Private School entrance or 11+ examinations. In addition I have two adult students learning Dutch as a second language.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I look forward to meeting you and to discuss your needs for private lessons. My aim is and always has been to provide comfortable and safe teaching surroundings with a personal education plan which has been put together after thorough discussions between the prospective student (and where appropriate their parents) and myself.
