Welcome to the Teaching Profile of Benjamin Ashby.

I am a Composer and Classical Pianist, and Scholar of Composition at the Royal College of Music, London.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I specialise in two main subject areas - Piano and Composition/Theory.

*Piano
I specialise in teaching students the elementary to intermediate stages of performance on the piano of all ages. I focus on teaching you or your child a strong and firm technique at playing the piano and maturing musicality. When you or your child reaches an advanced level (usually grade 6/7), I pass students onto fellow teachers who specialise in teaching piano at an advanced level (grade 8 to professional standard). I believe performance opportunities are imperative and always try to make sure my students partake in regular performances, not only to be inspiring for my students, but also so that excellent public performance skills are acquired.

*Composition of Classical Music, Film Music and Songwriting.
I specialise in teaching composition from elementary stages right up to the highest advanced level. Whether you are interested in writing classical music, film music or whether you want to write songs, I will ensure you receive a strong and firm understanding of how to compose music effectively, including acquiring excellent orchestration skills. Lessons are flexible and is a time to become inspired, play through ideas and learn how to write those ideas down.

*Music Theory
Music theory is essential for any musician. I specialise in teaching theory from elementary level right up to an advanced level. I try to make theory easy to understand, as well as inspiring and ways it can greatly improve your practical performance.

*GCSE & A-level Music
I also give personal tuition for those studying GCSE and A-level music who wish to have extra help with their courses.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I am currently Scholar of Composition at the Royal College of Music. I study with the reputable British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, and composer Ken Hesketh.
I previously worked for two schools helping students with their Music GCSE's as well as teaching A-level composition and theory modules.
What kind of experience do you have?
As a composer, I have received many commissions, including the orchestral piece 'Dieu Imperceptible', premièred in Paris. Other commissions include chamber works at festivals such as the Leicester International Music Festival and the National Gallery.
The piano is a strong part of my career and often perform new works by today's composers as well as classical repertoire.
How much do you charge?
I charge £28 per hour, £21 for 45 minutes and £15 per half hour. Initial consultation lessons are at a discounted rate of £20 for an hour/£10 half hour.
Where do you teach?
I teach at students' homes and I am willing to travel within most areas of London.
When are you available?
In general, at all times of the year.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach students of all ages, whether it is for your child, 6th form student or an adult learner.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for the ABRSM practical and theory exams if required. However, I try to not overburden students with examinations.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Enhanced CRB Checked.
