- Personal Message
- I am a bright, dynamic and friendly teacher. My ultimate goal in teaching the flute is for my pupils to find something in music that they do not always find in ordinary life as well as achieving their full potential. At the forefront of my teaching and lessons is fun and enjoyment but I am not afraid to push my pupils, knowing that out of focus and hard work come the most rewarding results and satisfaction. I also try to teach in a way that leads my pupils to continue to explore, experiment and develop their playing independently.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach flute, aural and theory lessons from beginner to post-grade 8 level. I can also coach chamber groups and can help prepare individuals for school, music college, university and youth orchestra auditions.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a post-graduate diploma specialising in flute from the Royal Academy of Music, London and a Bachelor of Music degree from Trinity College of Music, London. Prior to Music College entry I received distinction in grade 8 flute, harp and piano and an A in 'A' level music.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have over 5 years flute teaching experience. I currently hold a flute teaching and orchestral tutor post at Dunraven School in Streatham, London, teaching secondary school pupils from age 11 to 18 and beginner to grade 8. I also teach privately in the Brighton area and London with pupils ranging from 8 years to mid 50's and again from beginner to grade 8 levels. I previously held a maternity cover teaching post at Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School and Youth Music Centre in West London teaching ages 7 to 18. Until recently I worked for West Sussex Music Service teaching woodwind to individuals and small groups, and teaching 'Wider Opportunities' to full classes of Key Stage 2 pupils. I have also worked for Brighton and Hove Music and Performing Arts leading a saturday morning flute ensemble.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £30 per hour, £22.50 per 45 minutes, £15 per half an hour.
- Where do you teach?
- I travel to student's homes in and around Brighton and Hove area. I am also currently setting up a studio in Kemp Town in Brighton where students will be able to come for lessons. I also teach in Lewes where I have a studio and travel to student's homes. The location of lessons is usually decided according to the individual and what is convenient for pupil, parent and myself. I currently have private pupils in Hove, Preston Park, Brighton, Arundel, and Lewes. I consider pupils all over East Sussex and West Sussex depending on the situation.
- When are you available?
- I am generally flexible with my teaching. Lesson times are arranged with the individual and can be between the hours of 8am - 10pm, 7 days a week.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I thoroughly enjoy teaching all levels from beginner to post-grade 8 and children to elderly adults. It does not matter if a new pupil has never had any musical experience at all! The youngest age I would suggest for starting flute would be 7 years old but this really depends on the size of the child - the flute can be a stretch for small hands.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I am experienced in preparing pupils for Preparatory - Diploma level for both Associated Board and Trinity Guildhall exam boards. I also help pupils prepare for the performance aspect of their GCSE and 'A' Level courses.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained for my Bachelor of Music degree at Trinity College of Music studying flute with Anna Noakes. During this time I also spent a year abroad in the Netherlands, studying with Dutch flautists Wieke Karsten and Thies Roorda. I then went on to complete a Posgraduate Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music studying with Karen Jones and Michael Cox (Principal Flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra). I also studied the piccolo with Pat Morris and Sharon Williams (Piccolo with London Symphony Orchestra).
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I have a real range of pupils. I have one adult lady who is going to Africa soon to volunteer in an orphange and wanted to learn an instrument so she could play songs and nursey rhymes to the children. She has found she has a talent for the flute and wants to continue her lessons when she returns (of course for the teaching as well as a good natter at the end of each lesson!) At the other end of the spectrum I have teenage pupils working for their grade 8 exams to whom I teach the performing, aural and theory aspects of music, some of whom wish to pursue a musical career and an 11 year old boy in London who recently passed his grade 5 after only 2 years of learning the flute and has received a music scholarship to a prestigious secondary school.
