Personal Message
Hi! I have a proven track record of motivating and challenging students to ensure that pupils of all abilities and interests make outstanding progress - and have fun!
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I currently teach the piano and electronic keyboard in numerous primary and secondary schools throughout London, as well as privately in homes. This can involve beginner, classical, jazz, film music, and pop/chart songs.
Tell me about your qualifications.
- I was awarded a Bachelor of Music from the University of Manchester, which integrated classical piano lessons at the Royal Northern College of Music.
- I then went on to study at The Royal Academy of Music where I was awarded a Master of Arts in Performance, specialising in jazz piano.
- I was also awarded the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music Teaching Diploma.
- Whilst working for various London borough music services, I have received training in behaviour management, safeguarding children, and an aural/vocal approach to music education.
What kind of experience do you have?
As well as nine years of teaching private lessons, I have taught for teaching studios such as The Music Place, Atrincham and the Piano-Yoga® Music School, London. I have taught in schools for Enfield Music Service, Every Child A Musician, and at The Music School in Wanstead.

I have taught one-to-one, paired, small group, and whole class lessons. For example, at one school I'm responsible for planning, preparing and delivering a course of study from beginner to early grades. As well as using trusted tutor books, I transcribe and create arrangements of requested songs for playing solo and also playing as part of an ensemble, at the appropriate level for the students.

I'm also familiar with the national curriculum and national curriculum objectives, delivering whole class instrumental lessons as part of a team of teachers in one secondary school, and have prepared numerous students for Music GCSE and A-Level performance assessments, with excellent results.

I am also an active performing musician, composer and arranger, leading my own jazz quintet (see www.johncervantes.co.uk) at jazz festivals and venues throughout London and the UK. In July 2014 I recorded my debut album with support from Jazz Services Ltd and Arts Council England, and this will be released in 2015. Recent classical crossover performances have included performing solo piano works by Nikolai Kapustin, and Claude Bolling’s Concerto for Classical Guitar and Jazz Piano. Performance highlights:
• Festivals: St. Gallen Festival, Switzerland; London Jazz Festival; Manchester Jazz Festival; Derry Jazz Festival, N. Ireland; SambaFest, Poland.
• Venues: Vortex Jazz Club; Pizza Express Jazz Club Soho; 606 Jazz Club; King’s Place; The Forge; countless other regional jazz venues.
• Theatre: Soho Theatre - Alex Horne’s Horne Section comedy show (on-stage musician); Cafe de Paris - London Cabaret Society show (on-stage house band pianist).
• TV & Radio: Let’s Do Lunch with Gino & Mel (ITV); Nokia E7 phone advert (ITV & online); The Slammer (BBC One & CBBC); Mark Patterson Show (BBC Radio Ulster); Jazz Club (BBC Radio Ulster).
How much do you charge?
I charge £31 per hour. Shorter lesson times are often more suitable for children e.g. £16 for 30mins.
(Extra fees may apply if I need to travel far.)
Where do you teach?
I teach both from my home and in students' homes around Dulwich Village, West Dulwich, Crystal Palace, Gipsy Hill and Upper Norwood. I have also travelled to students' homes further away (such as South Kensington or Old Street), and have taught from practice rooms and music shops in central London e.g. Oxford Circus.
When are you available?
Please get in touch for my availability.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach children, teenagers, and adults at a variety of levels, including complete beginners as well as advanced pianists who have already learnt for many years.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I regularly prepare and enter my students for grade examinations in both the ABRSM classical & jazz piano syllabuses, and Trinity-Guildhall electronic keyboard syllabus. I make sure to keep up to date with the latest repertoire, requirements and supporting tests. Many of my students have achieved excellent exam results. I have also prepared school students for GCSE/A-Level performance assessments, and helped with composition.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up-to-date Disclosure & Barring Service Certificate which was issued in July 2014.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can tutor online using Skype or any other application. Files and resources can be sent electronically.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Musicians Union, including the Teachers Section. This provides me with public liability insurance.
Where and with whom did you train?
During my Bachelor degree at Manchester University I studied classical piano repertoire with Jeremy Young at the Royal Northern College of Music. During my Masters at The Royal Academy of Music I received jazz piano lessons from the country's most celebrated jazz piano teachers such as Nikki Iles, Pete Churchill, and Tom Cawley, and played in numerous big bands and ensembles. I studied hand percussion and world rhythms with Barak Schmool, and was a member of his drumming group Rhythms of the City. For my Teaching Diploma I was tutored by Head of Jazz Nick Smart, who was awarded the prestigious Jazz Education Award at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2013.
Tell me about some of your current students.
Some current students include:
- A nine-year old boy preparing for grade 3 ABRSM piano, alongside learning his favourite film music or pop song.
- A younger child who hasn't learnt an instrument before, working through a tutor book and playing musical games
- An adult who is advanced in classical music and wants to learn to improvise and play jazz
- A busy working adult, learning for pleasure
Do you have a personal message for students?
I assess and track my students’ progress, and plan goals for the short and long-term. I give my students clear practice instructions every lesson, and can write termly reports if requested. I always take into account my students' own interests and preferences, in addition to introducing them to new music and techniques. As a passionate musician, I make sure that the joy of making music is at the heart of every lesson.
