- I am a young, active professional who enjoys teaching the oboe to anyone from complete beginner to advanced students. I am passionate about the potential of each and every one of my students and am motivated to help them bring out their own, personal musicality and enjoyment in playing this wonderful instrument!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the Oboe and the Cor Anglais. Furthermore I coach amateur chamber ensembles and can take woodwind sectional rehearsals for youth orchestras.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a Master of Music (performance) degree and a Postgraduate Diploma (performance) (distinction) from the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester; a Bachelor of Music (performance) from the Rotterdam Conservatoire (now Codarts), Netherlands.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been teaching privately since my studies at the Rotterdam Conservatoire. My private students have mainly been teenagers and adults, at various levels. Furthermore, I was employed as an oboe teacher at the performing arts institute CKC Zoetermeer (Netherlands) where I taught pupils aged 7 - 70 at a great variety of levels, ranging from absolute beginner to music college audition standard. There I also taught small groups of young children in a general introduction course to woodwind instruments for which I personally developed all material.
As a member of Southbank Sinfonia (2009) I have been involved in various education projects with primary and secondary school pupils, ranging from inner city schools to renowned music departments of institutions such as Marlborough College. Teaching ranged from group lessons and improvisation sessions to individual tutoring.
As a performer I have held the post of co-principal oboe in Southbank Sinfonia 7 and am a regular extra with orchestras in both the Netherlands and the UK. Employers include the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dutch Radio Orchestras and Brabant Philharmonic. Alongside orchestral playing I regularly perform as a soloist and am a keen chamber music player: I am the principal oboe of the Dutch chamber ensemble DBS and a member of the SbS Wind Octet Tramontana. I am also part of the contemporary duo 2twenty (oboe/percussion).
I have done several years of Alexander Technique and have a wide range of experience with yoga, t'ai chi and Feldenkrais. - How much do you charge?
- £30 for a 60 minute lesson
It is possible to buy your reeds from me at prices ranging from £10 - £15 - Where do you teach?
- I teach at my home in Wanstead - a walk or brief busride away from Wanstead and Leytonstone tube stations. I am easily accessed from Redbridge, Newham, Barking, Dagenham, Waltham Forest, Leytonsone, Stratford, Ilford, Essex, East and West Ham, Leyton and Walthamstow.
Free off-street parking is available as well. - When are you available?
- My regular teaching days are Thursdays and Fridays all day and evening until 9 - allowing for some flexibility due to my freelance performance work. I am happy to reschedule the odd lesson if necessary.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- All ages and levels are welcome.
The only requirement is that students own an instrument, or can make their own arrangements for hiring one. As I only teach privately at the moment I have no ties with instrument rental schemes. - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- As I only teach privately I do not require a CRB check.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Musicians Union, Morgensterns Diary Service.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained at Masters level at the Royal Northern College of Music with Melinda Maxwell and Hansjörg Schellenberger.
For my undergraduate degree I trained with Emanuel Abbühl at the Rotterdam Conservatoire in the Netherlands. I have also had lessons/masterclasses with Douglas Boyd, Thomas Indermühle, François Leleux, David Walter, Alexei Ogrintchouk, Jonathan Small, Ian Hardwick and John Anderson, and with Carolyn Hove and Sue Bohling (cor anglais).
