Personal Message
I'm a very experienced art teacher now working as a freelance tutor and artist. My teaching is geared to helping students find their own 'voice' and build on their strengths.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach art, by which I mean drawing, painting, experimental work with mixed media and found objects, photoshop and all of these in different combinations. For a more light-hearted, non-exam approach, I also teach cartooning and humorous illustration.
Tell me about your qualifications.
Leicester University - B.A. (Hons) Art History Studies (Class 2:1)
St Martin's School of Art - P/T Studies Diplomas in Graphic Design & Illustration
University of Central England - Diploma in Professional Studies in Education (Art & Design Technology). Awarded with Distinction
Swindon College/Bath University - P G Diploma in Archaeological Illustration. Awarded with Distinction
What kind of experience do you have?
I have thirteen years experience of teaching in schools; twelve of those as Head of Department.
I have been a visiting lecturer at various art colleges.
I have also been a member of the Subject Advisory Committee for Art & Design for AQA.
I have also led art workshops at community events for organisations such as The Big Draw and the Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival
How much do you charge?
My fees range from £35 p/h for A Level students through to £25 for students at KS2. I'm also available for 'fun' workshops at a rate of £60 p/h - maximum number of children is 10 at any one time. I don't charge for travel within a 20-mile radius of Hastings; beyond that I'm open to negotiation.
Where do you teach?
I teach in students' homes or, if necessary, at another appropriate centre to suit. I am based in Hastings and can travel easily to Rye, Eastbourne, Bexhill and Battle.
When are you available?
I am available Monday - Friday all year round, including during school holidays. Times can be arranged to suit.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach Key Stages 2, 3, 4 & A Level
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE Art & Design
A Level Art & Design
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I have current Enhanced CRB disclosure.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Where appropriate, students can submit images to me via email for feedback. Where large image files are involved, I have effective arrangements for uploading these completely painlessly. I will charge for my time at the corresponding hourly rate.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and...
Associate Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and...
a Member of the Association of Illustrators and...
a committee member of the Professional Cartoonists' Organisation
Where and with whom did you train?
My art training has taken place both in and out of Art College; I have been a student at St Martin's School of Art, the University of Central England and Swindon College, but the very best experience is that gained when I allowed my artistic spirit to roam!
Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe everyone is a special kind of artist, and I'm very confident that I can bring out your talents. As well as my art training, I have an Art History degree and can easily point you towards artists who will inspire and enrich you. I can show you how to develop your skills in drawing and composition, as well as give you plenty of confidence in experimentation and making your own judgments. If you find it reassuring... when I last worked full time as an A Level teacher, two of my young painters featured in the top five scoring candidates in the UK!
