- Personal Message
- Are you looking for guitar lessons for yourself or your child? My guitar learning programmes offer so much more than just weekly lessons and aim to help you achieve the results you want.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I specialise in teaching rock/pop guitar styles. I do not teach classical guitar, but do teach rock/pop guitar to students who play acoustic or classical guitars.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- BA (hons) Popular Music Studies from the University of Leeds, BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts from the BRIT School in Croydon, various teaching courses from local authorities and specialist organisations
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have over 5 years teaching experience and have worked for Wandsworth Music Service, SCOLA in Sutton, Richmond Childminding Service and Sound Connections teaching and running music workshops for children of all ages. I've been playing guitar and bass for well over 20 years in bands too numerous to mention. You can read more about my background and credentials in my downloads section.
- How much do you charge?
- I offer a free evaluation session to all prospective students, with no obligation to continue. All lesson packages include added extras that set me apart from the average guitar teacher, which will be of huge benefit to your playing. Because of this, I do not charge an "hourly rate" as such. Instead, we will talk through your playing goals at the evaluation session and come up with a unique learning strategy from there. For more info on this, please visit my website.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach in central Purley, close to the town centre and very easily accessible by car, train and bus if you live in Purley, Coulsdon, Croydon or any of the surrounding areas of Wallington, Carshalton, Woldingham, Caterham, Sutton, Warlingham and north Surrey.
- When are you available?
- Currently my teaching hours are from about 4pm-8.30pm Monday to Thursday and 10am-1pm Saturday, although this is subject to change. This fits in with most people's work/school commitments. Guitar teaching is my main source of income and I love it! I take it very seriously so will try my best to teach as many people as I can within these limitations.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all ages and am used to working with very young babies and children through to older children and teenagers. I also have some adult students. I teach beginners and intermediates.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- Rockschool Grades
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes, one from Wandsworth Schools Music, one from Croydon Music Service and one from Sutton LEA.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Music Leader, Musicians Union
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- Currently I have students who are studying for Rockschool grades, others who are learning the basics of music theory and reading music and some who are simply learning to play songs they enjoy using simple chords and strumming techniques. I recently put on a performance in Croydon for some of my students, which went down exceptionally well; I am planning many more of these. The Youtube video I have linked to shows one of my students, Katherine, performing a song we had been working on at her school showcase evening. In October half term I ran a Rock Band Workshop for some of my students and other local young musicians, which included elements of improvising, songwriting and performance techniques.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- I really try to place an emphasis on learning for fun in my lessons. While I will teach formally if required, it's my aim to get you playing the styles of music you enjoy as soon as possible. I believe that a good foundation in scales, exercises and music theory is essential to becoming an all-round musician but if you want to learn to play some of your favourite songs and really enjoy what you are learning, I will make that the priority.
