- Personal Message
- Hi! I am a multi-instrumentalist, ideal for families looking for one teacher to cover all the different teaching needs of the family. I also have 5 years experience in teaching adults.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I primarily teach trumpet/flugelhorn, but I also teach guitar, bass guitar, music theory and beginner to intermediate piano. I teach all styles and offer a variety of different lessons and approaches depending on your needs and circumstances. I can prepare and enter students for examinations, right through to help with song-writing and improvisation. I incorporate both teaching by ear and teaching from written music, as the student wishes.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- Qualifying for ATCL in Instrumental Teaching in June 2012 (Trinity Guildhall). Grade 8 trumpet with distinction, Grade 7 piano, SOAS Graduate with BMus.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have 5 years private tuition experience in London. I teach from absolute beginners right through to advanced students. I also have experience teaching trumpet, guitar, bass and piano in schools in South Africa, both group teaching and one-to-to. My youngest pupil is 8 years old, my oldest 60. I am willing to teach every age in between and either side!
- How much do you charge?
- £25 per hour. £40 for 2 hours. £12.50 half hour.
- Where do you teach?
- I mostly teach from my home in Lambeth North, but I also travel to student's houses. I am often in Hackney, and am happy to travel to most parts of London to teach: Harringay, Hackney, Islington, Camden, Hampstead, Bow, Lewisham, Lambeth, Southwark and West London.
- When are you available?
- I am always available! I can teach weekdays after school hours, or in the day for adults. I am also available on weekends. I am flexible and can usually fit around your schedule.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all ages from beginners right up to advanced students.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I can prepare students for ABRSM and/or Trinity Guildhall examinations as they wish.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Currently Processing.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I have been fortunate to study with many great teachers. I studied trumpet under Brian Rance and Paul Lunga, Zimbabwe's "King of Jazz Horns". At SOAS I studied Cuban Bata under Crispin Robinson. But I would say my greatest training has been on the stage with some of London's - and indeed the world's - top-class musicians.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- One of my students has been learning flugelhorn with me as a complete beginner since Jan 2011. From not being able to making a sound he now knows all the notes on the instrument and is beginning to play the tunes he has been wanting to learn. In lessons we split the time between working on technique, learning notes and getting a beautiful tone on the instrument, reading music and playing melodies and songs that the pupil likes to learn - we sometimes play together as a duet, which he particularly enjoys.
I have been working with a piano student since November 2010 - she had played before as a child up to grade 5 standard and started again with me. We split the time between learning pieces, working on and expanding her musical knowledge, exploring a range of styles and improvisation and composition.
I also have students in South Africa. I conducted teacher training for music teachers in the schools I was teaching and also taught 20plus children to play trumpet, guitar, bass and keyboards. Having not previously played a note on trumpet, 9 weeks I had the beginnings of a brass band playing when the saints, Nkosi Sikeleli Afrika and other South African tunes in 3 or 4 part harmony! Please visit www.musicforafrica.org for more information. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- Learning any instrument can really empower you; learning the trumpet is the learning to play the king of the orchestra! Learning an instrument enables you to express yourself in ways that previously was not possible; is proven by science to be very good for your brain; helps you connect and experience unity with the people you are playing with; can provide you with an exciting career - the benefits are endless! Oh, and did I forget to mention, you will have an awful lot of fun !
I wish you the best of luck and good fortune in your musical pursuit.
