- I feel that the best musicians are diverse and flexible musicians, and this is the ethos by which I teach.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach 'cello, clarinet and sax (both classical and jazz) from beginner to advanced, guitar (rock and pop) up to intermediate. I also teach classical singing, up to an intermediate level.
Although I mainly teach classical, I am more than happy to teach jazz, and various types of folk music (Klezmer is a particular specialism of mine!). I can include musicianship and theory lessons as part of my instrumental teaching, or teach them separately. For music tech and composition, I am able to teach up to and includng A2, and am happy to help more advanced students on individual projects and pieces! I also offer lessons on Sibelius music notation software. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- ABRSM Grade 8 on 'cello and clarinet. A-levels in Music and Music Technology. I am currently in the 4th year of a BMus at the Birmingham Conservatoire, specialising in composition.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have a wide range of experience as a performer. I have played and sung in orchestras, chamber music groups, jazz bands of various types, an indie band, Klezmer groups, and cutting edge contemporary music ensembles. As a singer, I am a member of the Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus (the latter of which have awarded me a scholarship for the past two years).
I've been teaching privately for around two years now, with very good results! I've also lead/help out at workshops, in schools and at festivals, with ensembles as varied as Steel Pan bands and folk groups. In September 2011 I was appointed as a mentor at the Birmingham Conservatoire Junior Departmant. - How much do you charge?
- I charge £18 per hour, £15 for 45mins, and £10 per half hour. I would only charge for transport if I needed to travel outside of central Birmingham (basically, anywhere that's not a bike ride away. Or a walk, if I need my 'cello!) I'm happy to discuss discounts for group lessons.
- Where do you teach?
- I prefer to teach at my own home in Edgbaston, due to my fairly packed schedule, but I am willing to travel if necessary.
- When are you available?
- My diary is very flexible, and ever changing! In general, weekends are good for me, as are most thursdays and fridays. In any case, I'm always willing to try and work in more pupils!
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all ages. Many of my pupils are beginners, some coming to music later in life than others!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I am happy to teach students in preparation for ABRSM/Trinity music exams, for GCSE/A-Level exams/recitals, or just for fun!
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I do.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Musicians' Union.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I've studied clarinet with Chris Allen (of ABRSM study book fame!), and 'cello with Lionel Handy. In my time at the Birmingham Conservatoire and CBSO Chorus, I've had the privilege to work under the likes of Simon Rattle, Mark Elder, Simon Halsey and Jeffrey Skidmore.
