- Personal Message
- I have a friendly approach to teaching and enjoy the challenge of making playing a brass instrument accessible to all. At times learning brass instruments can be a frustrating business so it helps to patient and understanding as a teacher.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach trumpet and trombone, mostly to beginners and intermediate students. I can introduce a little jazz if appropriate and if desired as the student progresses, although I feel it is important to also get a good grounding in general musical technique and understanding.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a diploma from Trinity College of Music (and also an MA from Cambridge University).
I am a freelance musician, playing all over the UK and sometimes abroad with many bands, playing brass instruments and double bass. I run a number of bands that you can look up at www.londonjazzandswingbands.com - What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been teaching children and adults of all ages for several years, and had success putting them through grade exams when desired by the students.
- How much do you charge?
- I usually charge £20 per lesson, which is generally about 40 minutes long. It depends also on how far away you are.
- Where do you teach?
- I prefer to visit students to teach. You need to be within cycling distance of Upper Holloway / Finsbury Park (2 1/2 miles max).
- When are you available?
- Generally daytimes and early evenings on weekdays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I tend to teach beginners to intermediates, young children to adults.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- If they are keen to do a grade exam I can prepare them for it.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- I've had checks in the past but nothing up to date.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Musicians Union
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I learned at school, at Trinity College of Music, and privately with several leading musicians, although much of my training has been 'on the job'.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- Alan, a solicitor, who is learning Euphonium and hoping to be take grade 5 soon. I teach him at 8:30 in the morning!
Josh, aged 12 who is learning trumpet and hoping to take grade 4 soon.
Rachel is learning trombone and has just been accepted to Junior Guildhall School of Music. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- I'm enthusiastic, and when the student is also enthusiastic then progress can be made quickly while having lots of fun. As a tutor I give tips, advice, suggestions and offer help in lessons. A student then needs to find a bit of time to work on things between lessons. This is when you really make progress.
