- I am a young and enthusiastic music teacher and tutor based in South West London.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the following subjects:
Trombone, Trumpet, Cornet, Euphonium, Tuba, all other valved brass.
Jazz improvisation and harmony
Music Theory
Composition and arranging
GCSE and A Level Music including Composition
GCSE and A Level Latin - Tell me about your qualifications.
- DipABRSM Trombone
Grade 8 Piano, Trombone, Music Theory
A Level Music and Latin
Extensive work in the music industry as a trombonist for professional ensembles including the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, and the Callum Au Big Band; and as a composer or arranger for the BBC Big Band, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and the Henry Armburg Jennings Big Band.
BA (Hons) Oxford University - Classics - What kind of experience do you have?
- I have worked as a private music tutor for the past three years, both taking students through exams and helping them master the technicalities of their instrument. I have run workshops with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, both in London and in schools around the country. I have also tutored for several agencies in and around the London area as a Latin and Classics tutor.
Included in my profile are three videos of my big band, the Callum Au Big Band, playing my own compositions and arrangements. - How much do you charge?
- For most subjects, my hourly rate is £35. My half-hourly rate is £25. Additionally, if I have to travel, I will charge the oyster card fare for two single journeys (usually £3.80). For university-level Classical Studies or Music, as these are more in depth and require more preparation, I charge £45 per hour.
- Where do you teach?
- I prefer to teach in my home office in Brixton. This is a comfortable, airy space which is perfectly suited to the demands of teaching, situated just over 5 minutes walk away from Brixton tube station, and 1 minute from Villa Road bus stop. Parents can sit in and watch the lesson if they wish.
Alternatively, I can travel to a student's home, if travel time is within a one hour round trip. This encompasses most of central and South West London, including Brixton, Clapham, Vauxhall, Kensington, Waterloo, Victoria, Marylebone, Streatham, and so forth. - When are you available?
- I aim to be as flexible as possible and to fit around what you are able to do. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school are often good times - but I am willing to work around your needs.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all ages and ability levels.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I believe in teaching so that my pupils learn, rather than tutoring exactly to the exam. That said, my method of teaching prepares students very well for both GCSE and A Level and ABRSM and Trinity-Guildhall grades.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Not at present. If required I can get one.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I use Skype with a webcam. I will also occasionally ask for a scan of pupil's written work where relevant.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I was a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra for six years, four of which I spent playing principal trombone. I have studied under Terry Reaney and Mark Nightingale.
Academically, I attended Oxford University for four years, where I trained in Classics, with a particular specialisation in ancient and modern philosophy. - Tell me about some of your current students.
- I currently teach a wide ranges of ages and ability levels - from six year old beginners to 50-year old adults. I aim to tailor the experience to suit each student's individual needs as closely as possible.
