- Personal Message
- I am a professional musician, with years of experience in performing, composing and arranging music of many different styles, as well as teaching in schools and music services.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the trumpet in both jazz and classical styles, as well as tutoring students for ABRSM Music Theory, GCSE and A Level music exams. As an experienced composer and arranger, I am also happy to offer tuition to University students looking for help in these areas.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have achieved ABRSM Grade 8 on the Trumpet and Piano, as well as Grade 5 Theory. At Bristol University I was awarded a 1st Class BA degree in music, before continuing to achieve a MA in Music Composition with distinction; I am currently continuing my studies part-time at Brunel University, where I am undertaking PhD research into improvisation.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been studying music in various forms for the last fifteen years, during which time I have gained extensive experience in the performance and composition of many different musical styles. My key areas of interest are contemporary music and jazz improvisation, but in the past I have performed in symphony orchestras, wind bands, brass bands, big bands, rock bands, ska-punk bands, klezmer bands - any many others! I have recently performed with such renowned artists as Neville Staples (former lead singer of The Specials) and Carl Douglas (of 'Kung-fu Fighting' fame), and at events such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
As a composer and arranger I have worked in an equally diverse collection of genres. My original compositions been performed across the UK, including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Bristol Southbank Festival, and the 2009 ISCM World Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. I am also composer and arranger in residence with London's 'One-Night-Stand Big Band', and 'The Groove Giants' function band.
Between 2008-9 I worked as Graduate Music Assistant at Abingdon School; during this time I gave weekly theory classes to groups of students with varying musical experience, as well as giving one-on-one lessons in aural skills. I have also worked as a tutor for A Level musicians at Cotham High School in Bristol, and for the Berkshire Maestros county music service. I currently have several pupils studying trumpet, theory and GCSE music around the West London, Middlesex and South Buckinghamshire areas. - How much do you charge?
- £25 for 60 mins
£15 for 30 mins
I also offer a free 30 minute introductory meeting or lesson for anyone who would like to know more about me or my teaching style. - Where do you teach?
- I am only able to teach at students' homes, but I am happy to travel to Isleworth, Twickenham, Hounslow, Richmond, Brentford, Kingston, Ealing and many other local areas in Middlesex, Surrey and West London (anywhere within 5 to 8 miles of TW7)
- When are you available?
- I am freely available throughout the week and weekend, and am happy to continue teaching through school holiday periods.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I am happy to teach all ages and abilities, and aim to tailor my tuition to the needs of each student.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- ABRSM Classical and Jazz
ABRSM Music Theory
GCSE / A Level Music - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have had a full enhanced CRB check in 2009, and am currently in the process of renewing.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I am happy to tutor composition and music theory online, either through e-mail correspondence, instand messaging or Skype.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am a full member of 'Sound Sense' - the union of community musicians.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- Trumpet - Chesham Grammar School (Graeme Hollingdale); University of Bristol (Simon Jones); Dartington Summer School 2011 (Paul Archibald)
Composition - University of Bristol (Geoff Poole, Nick Caswell); Brunel University (Peter Wiegold, Colin Riley) - Tell me about some of your current students.
- Among my students are trumpeters training for their grade 5 and 6 exams, one trumpeter who is focusing on improving their jazz playing, 2 GCSE students (one receiving composition help, the other more general tuition) and a theory student working towards grade 5. Previous students have also included A-Level composition students and those working towards music college entries.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Always enjoy what you're doing! The joy of playing, writing and experiencing music should be at the centre of everything we do as musicians, and if you're not enjoying it then something needs to change. Even scales and technical exercises, boring as they might seem, can be made interesting if approached the right way; have fun with it!
