BA English Christ's College, Cambridge: 2:1
What kind of experience do you have?
I've been tutoring in a informal capacity since secondary school, when my peers would come to me for help with their work and in particular for an accessible explanation of the more complex ideas we were looking at; I've been tutoring formally now for the last seven years across students of all ages, requirements and capabilities, focused mainly on GCSE, AS and A-level preparation all the way through to University Masters, in the areas of English, History, RS/ethics. I am particularly experienced in improving essay technique and writing style - a key issues for many students - and I have worked with students across Law, Business, Geography, Philosophy and Classics to help them improve.

I have experience with learning difficulties, especially dyslexia, which I have helped my brother to cope with through his studies for the last few years. To me, it just means having to find another way to approach the information and make it accessible. Though I'm not formally qualified as TEFL teacher, I've had several foreign students who needed to learn both formal and conversational English from a very basic level of understanding.
How much do you charge?
I charge £25-30 an hour, depending on subject - this is a flat charge that remains the same for individuals or groups of students. If travel is covered by my weekly railcard within zones 1 and 2, there will of course be no extra charge for travel, but if it is costly to reach a student I will ask for fare to be covered.
Where do you teach?
I live in Clapham, South West London, and I am happy to travel across London as long as there is accessible transport. I teach in my flat, at students' homes, and in mutually convenient spaces e.g coffee shops, libraries etc.
When are you available?
I work full time, so I teach after 6:30pm weekdays and any time during the weekend. I try and work with as many students as possible.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach students all ages ranging from 14-adult, from GCSE - Masters degrees and any other professional qualifications.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE
AS-Level
A-Level
Undergraduate degrees
Masters degrees
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
yes
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I work online using Skype, email to send detailed edits, commentaries and advice.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Having tutored for years across a range of students, I firmly believe that everyone can understand an idea once it's made accessible to them. My students tell me that I help them cut to the heart of complex ideas and really make them their own. I'n always looking for that moment when they really GET it for the first time; after that, all the barriers just fall away. I want learning to be liberating for them, and enjoyable. I try to be creative in the ways we work so that it's the right method for them. However, I know first hand the results that can be achieved when a good exam technique is combined with a thorough understanding - all too often they are assumed to be the same thing - so I always make sure that time is spent, once the subject is grasped, practising writing exercises, essay technique, and mark scheme strategies. Together, all these things should create a solid base of knowledge, good results and confident candidates.
