- Personal Message
- I am a skilled, committed English tutor, working in Rochester, Kent to enhance young people's abilities in English and to build their confidence, preparing them for the academic challenges to come.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach English from year 5 to year 13, including: Key Stage 2, 11+, Common Entrance, Functional English, Key Stage 3, GCSE, A-Level, I.B., adult literacy and dyslexics. Pupils have one-to-one tuition; in some circumstances I will consider teaching well-matched pairs of pupils.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have A-Levels in English, French and Music (1983) and a degree in English and Social Anthropology from Cambridge University (Trinity College, 1989).
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I taught in reputable independent secondary schools for 17 years and I have been tutoring for 20 years. I have three years' experience as a GCSE examiner and I have taught for Excel in Key Subjects at City University. I have taught many children with Dyslexia and many who do not speak English at home. I have prepared candidates for university interviews, including Oxbridge (pupils have gone on to study English at Cambridge, Warwick, Durham and St Andrews). I currently teach young people aged 8 to 18, from a variety of schools across the Medway towns. All my recent 11+ pupils passed safely, and GCSE and A-Level results were strong.
- How much do you charge?
- My fees reflect my extensive experience. At the same time, they are competitive, ranging from £25 for year 5 to £30 for A-Level work and £35 for university interview preparation.
- Where do you teach?
- Pupils benefit from an exceptionally pleasant and peaceful environment for their lessons, at my home in central Rochester, Kent. Because I am at home, I have instant access to my teaching materials, so that I can respond immediately to a pupil's needs. My home is easily accessible from the A2, A228, M2 and M20, and is an easy five to ten minute walk from the railway station.
- When are you available?
- Every weekday from3.45 pm. Earlier afternoon and morning appointments may be possible.
All day Saturday.
All day Sunday.
I teach during part of the longer school holidays.
(10/12/11: There are currently 2 vacant hours.) - Which ages and levels do you teach?
- Typically, ages 8 to 18, at all levels. Having been a school-teacher for seventeen years, I have broad teaching experience and am equipped to teach a wide range of ages and abilities. I have access to a large collection of high-quality teaching materials and I keep up to date with changes to education.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- 11+, Common Entrance, GCSE, A-Level, I.B., Pre-U.
I also teach adult literacy. - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes, dated November 2011.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I belong to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I learnt to teach on the job, learning from colleagues and from experience of teaching a wide range of classes over many years. Teaching is in my blood: I am the third generation of teachers in my family and learnt a great deal from my mother, who was also an English teacher. There is no better training for a teacher than simply teaching and learning as you go!
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I am currently teaching several pupils from years 12 and 13 for A-Level English Literature / English Language and Literature. Many pupils are studying for their GCSE English and English Literature. I have pupils at Key Stages 2 and 3. Currently there are 35 pupils on my books, 13 of whom have been with me for over a year.
My pupils have all achieved the results they aimed for; please see my website blog for further details. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- You know that you need to pass or excel at English, but for some reason you're not getting the results you need. Does this sound like you?
As an experienced teacher, I can quickly identify areas where you need to improve, and work out strategies to help you. I can give you the individual attention that your class-teacher hasn't the time for. If you feel that you're getting behind at school, we can work together to make up the lost ground and provide you with the skills that you need. I will make sure that you enjoy your English lessons and finish each one with a sense of achievement.
With me, you will sharpen your technical skills, becoming better at spelling, punctuation and grammar. You will become a more fluent reader, with improved comprehension ability. You will experience a broad range of writing during your lessons (poetry, drama, novels, media extracts), to develop your enjoyment of the subject and your analytical skills. Your vocabulary will grow, and eventually all these benefits will bear fruit in your written work.
Students of literature will have the opportunity to go into more depth in their lessons, and to obtain another angle of the texts that they're studying at school.
I can help you prepare specifically for your exams, or enhance your English studies in the long-term so that you're equipped for the exams when they happen.
