- I am a professional, full-time maths education specialist with a core focus on providing tuition to individuals and small groups.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach maths, or anything with a significant mathematical element. This includes:
at GCSE or IGCSE, maths and statistics;
at AS-Level, A-Level or Cambridge Pre-U, pure maths (core and further pure), and applied maths (statistics, mechanics and decision);
at degree level, the content of a maths degree, or the mathematical content of a non-maths degree. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a Ph.D. (doctorate) in maths (which involved conducting in-depth academic research into a specialist area of the subject) together with a first-class honours degree in maths from the University of Warwick. I also obtained A grades in both A-Level and GCSE maths.
I have a PGCE teacher training qualification. - What kind of experience do you have?
- While completing my teacher training qualification, I had the opportunity to teach students in two different ways. Of course, I taught students in the normal medium to large size classes, but I also tutored students individually and in small groups. I found that the approaches and skills needed in each of these two situations were very different.
I found that, overwhelmingly, individual and small group tutoring was more beneficial for the student. It was also more enjoyable personally. As a result I decided to become a professional tutor, and have now been successfully tutoring for ten years. - How much do you charge?
- My current hourly fee for individual tuition is £35. This includes all travel costs. A discounted per person hourly fee is available for group sessions.
- Where do you teach?
- Normally my tuition takes place in the student's home. However, alternative arrangements may be available on request.
If you live within 45 minutes of Andover, I can offer you tuition. The areas of Hampshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire I cover include Winchester, Newbury, Salisbury, Marlborough, Basingstoke and Southampton. - When are you available?
- I can offer tuition during weekdays (daytime and evening).
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I tutor from school year 10 and upwards, including degree level and adult tuition.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- Any qualification with a significant mathematical element.
Examples include: GCSE and IGCSE; AS-Level, A-Level and Cambridge Pre-U; University entrance exams (for example, STEP or Oxford entrance exams); Mathematical courses studied as part of a degree. - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes, I have a full enhanced CRB disclosure.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I can offer online tuition via Skype.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Many maths tutors are either school teachers doing a favour for those that need extra help, or university students trying to fill some spare time. Such tutors can often make progress in helping a student to understand maths. However, because tutoring is not their primary activity there will usually be a limit to what they can achieve.
What I offer is different. I am a professional, full-time maths education specialist with a core focus on providing tuition to individuals and small groups. I spend a large part of each day tutoring students in this way and so I believe that I can help anyone, whatever their current level, make significant improvements in their abilities and understanding.
My experience, together with my qualifications, give me a uniquely expert subject knowledge which I have used to help hundreds of students reach their maximum potential in what can be a very challenging area.
