Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
Political science, political philosophy, bioethics, sociology, essay writing and exam skills. I also offer proofreading services.

Tell me about your qualifications.
2002 - BA in Philosophy, Sociology and Political Science (Hons 2.1). National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI Galway).
2008 - PhD in Political Theory titled: Equality of Whom? A Genetic Perspective on Equality (of Opportunity). NUI Galway. Winner of the Basil Chubb Prize (2009).

Awarded in 2008, my doctoral thesis went on to win the 2009 PSAI Basil Chubb Prize in recognition for being the best PhD thesis (produced in an Irish university) in any field of politics. For further details, see the Political Studies Association of Ireland website. The thesis is currently being prepared for publication as a book titled Egalitarianism in the Age of Genetics (2012).

What kind of experience do you have?
As of September 2011, I am lecturing with the Department of Politics in Birkbeck College - University of London’s specialised provider of evening higher education. Prior to this, I lectured with the School of Political Science and Sociology in the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI Galway), where I taught since 2003 as teaching assistant and since 2006 as lecturer.

I have taught on a diverse range of topics across disciplinary boundaries, including the history of political theory, contemporary political theories of social justice, bioethics, political philosophy, sociology and political science. I have also extensive experience as an examiner – both setting and correcting exams, essays and other written assignments. I have convened numerous essay writing and exam preparation workshops and have taught at all levels/years at university level, including one-to-one tutoring.

I am a referee for academic journals which includes proofreading manuscripts to ensure suitability for publication.

How much do you charge?
The tutoring rate is £28 per contact hour (which includes preparation), plus travel expenses for travel outside zones 1 and 2. The rate for proofreading is £30 per hour.

Prices can be reduced if a minimum number of tutoring hours are booked in advance.

Where do you teach?
I am based in WC1 and can travel to London locations within postcode areas: EC N NW SE SW W. Place of meeting is at sole discretion of student – whether in their home, in a quiet cafe, booked room (by student) in student’s college campus or any other suitable location.

When are you available?
I can tutor all days of the week, most evenings, except Sundays.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
All college and university levels – both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. May also suit some A-level students. Interest in teaching all ages from 17-18+, with particular emphasis on adult learners and those returning to education.

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
BA, MA, PG Dip, MPhil, PhD (proofreading is essential for the latter degrees).

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
No.

Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can offer all the above by email correspondence.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
The Association for Legal and Social Philosophy (ALSP)
Society for Applied Philosophy
Political Studies Association (PSA)
The Political Studies Association of Ireland (PSAI)
International Political Science Association’s Research Committee 12 (Biology and Politics) & Committee 36 (Political Power)

Where and with whom did you train?
National University of Ireland, Galway (1999-2008)

Tell me about some of your current students.
I am teaching adult learners of all ages and all educational backgrounds – including those with postgraduate qualifications in other fields and those without formal educational qualifications.

Do you have a personal message for students?
Having attended Film College and worked as a camera operator and editor in the nineties for various commercial video production companies, I returned to full time education as a mature student to pursue writing and to have an excuse just to read. Thanks to some very influential tutors and lecturers, my career and life changed dramatically and I have since left my camera behind for the endlessly fascinating world of political philosophy. In short, education can be profoundly life-changing and it should be the mission of every tutor and lecturer worth their salt to aspire to make this possible for their students.
