Economics is the study of wealth, how it's produced, and how it's consumed. It's an essential part of our everyday lives and there are lots of students choosing to study it at in school at GCSE and A Level or on university degree courses.
With that in mind, let's look at why economics should be one of the subjects you study, the challenges you may face, what you can learn about economics at school, and how private home tuition can offer the best possible teaching experience.
They say money makes the world go round and it does. Studying economics will not only help students understand how the world works, but it'll also improve their chances of finding work in economics, finance, accounting, domestic and international business, and teaching.
Of course, you can do more than just work in jobs related to economics. You'll also be taught some valuable transferrable skills that you can use outside of school and university and in lines of work that aren't directly related to economics. You'll learn how to better communicate, develop maths and numeracy skills, learn how to solve problems, and improve your time management skills.
Of course, if this was one of the easier subjects, everyone would be an expert in it. Students need maths and numeracy skills to do well in economics and without them, they may struggle. Some of the best university courses demand that students have an A Level in maths.
Economics lessons are often quite conceptual and theoretical and students that like to learn by doing may need help understanding concepts that they don't get to see first-hand. Teachers and tutors will need to bring the lesson alive with engaging activities and examples to help students see what's going on.
The first opportunity students in London will have to study economics will probably be at GCSE. There may be years before this when they're introduced to the subject in school either through maths or independently, but the GCSE will be the first time they have an opportunity to gain qualifications.
With that in mind, let's see some of the topics they'll cover on their GCSE. We've taken the AQA exam as an example and while exam boards may have some minor differences, the overall course and topics should be largely the same.
The course is split into two main sections: how markets work and how the economy works.
For markets, students will learn about economic foundations, resource allocation, how prices are determined, production, costs, revenue, and profit, competitive and concentrated markets, and market failure.
As for the economy, students will get an introduction to the national economy and study government objectives, how the government manages the economy, international trade and the global economy, and the role of money and financial markets.
Once a student finished their GCSE, they can continue their studies with an A Level in Economics. Don't forget that an A Level in Maths is often required for economics university courses so you'll want to be studying both subjects.
From there, they can study economics or a specific branch of economics at university. With an economics degree, there are an awful lot of different jobs you can do.
If you need help or would like to learn about economics, a private home tutor is an excellent decision. Tutors can provide academic support for subjects that you're studying in school and university or offering tutoring in subjects and skills that you aren't being taught elsewhere.
A school or university student can get private home tuition to help them with their GCSE, A Level, or degree in economics and the tutoring will focus on helping them learn what they've been taught by their teachers to get the best possible exam results.
Professionals and adults can also benefit from home tutoring. Whether you work in business or are looking to move into the world of finance and economics, an experienced tutor can offer a tailored teaching approach so that you can learn new skills or add another bow to your CV.
The important thing about private tuition is that each lesson is planned with the student in mind. Teachers in school and university don't necessarily have the time or resources to best adapt every lesson to every individual student in the class. This means that students who prefer to learn in different ways can fall behind or advanced students may never reach their full potential.
With private tuition from an experienced and qualified tutor, every economics student can enjoy the teaching approach that's right for them.
If you're looking for private economics tutoring in London, just search on the Superprof website. There are plenty of experienced and qualified tutors available and you can view their profiles for free. If you'd like to contact them, you'll need to invest in the Student Pass, which is valid for a month and allows you to contact as many tutors as you'd like.
When looking for private tutors, make sure to check whether they offer the first lesson for free. You can use these free lessons to try out several tutors before deciding which one is right for you or your child.
You'll also need to consider a budget for private lessons so remember that the more experienced a tutor is, the more they'll charge. Similarly, supply and demand will greatly affect the cost of tutors. The more tutors there are available and the lower the demand, the cheaper the tutors tend to be. Of course, you'll learn all about this in your private economic tutorials!
If you can't find any suitable tutors in or around London, don't forget that you can also get private tutoring online and a tutor can teach you via webcam. As long as you have a webcam and a decent internet connection, you can learn from tutors all over the world at any time of day!
