Chemistry is the study of matter and how it behaves at the atomic and molecular level. Just like physics and biology, it's one of the main sciences studied at school where students will study how chemical form bonds to one another and how every material in the known universe interacts.
It's an important science and given how much it's studied during compulsory schooling it's important to have a good grasp of it before you leave school. If you want to move into a career in the sciences, you may consider one of the many fields that use chemistry as a foundation.
Let's see why it's important to study chemistry, the challenges you may face during your studies, what parts of the subject are taught in schools, how online chemistry tuition can help, and how to find an online chemistry tutor if you decide that you'd like to improve.
As we mentioned, chemistry looks at every material in the universe and how atoms and molecules. Chemistry can provide students with an excellent foundation for the other sciences, too. Pupils studying chemistry in school will probably get their first experience of the scientific method in chemistry class.
Furthermore, chemistry is probably the most appealing of the sciences at first glance. Young pupils have the opportunity to be wowed by chemical reactions and the first experiments you get to do in school are usually far more entertaining than those in biology and physics.
That isn't to say that biology and physics aren't fascinating subjects in their own right but chemistry has more appeal at first glance and the experiments done in school chemistry lessons can be entertaining.
Chemistry also leads to several other sciences like botany, geology, ecology, pharmacology, and forensics. Of course, these may also require a foundation in biology or physics but a sound knowledge of chemistry is a must.
Finally, the most pragmatic reason to study chemistry is that you have to. As a compulsory subject throughout school, you'll end up having to do it at GCSE as either a single science or as part of a double award science GCSE so if you want good grades, you'll need to study chemistry whether you like it or not.
Studying chemistry isn't always easy. Some students may excel in it while others struggle with certain concepts. Much like the other hard sciences like physics and biology, chemistry deals with a lot of abstract concepts that we can't necessarily see with the naked eye and some pupils will struggle with the abstraction required.
Similarly, chemistry can be a costly subject to make engaging and some schools on tighter budgets won't be able to provide an entertaining experience for students every lesson with experiments. It can be really difficult to perform well in a subject you don't like and if you never get the opportunity to enjoy some of the most fascinating parts of studying a subject, getting good at it may always be an uphill struggle.
Then there's the maths element. Just like in biology, and physics, chemistry lessons often have students performing calculations and if you don't have a strong foundation in maths or it's not one of your best subjects, you'll naturally struggle in certain areas of chemistry. You can't be expected to calculate the results of an experiment if you have difficulties with numbers.
As chemistry is a compulsory subject through to GCSE, let's see what most students in schools in the UK will study when they do a double award science GCSE or a single science chemistry GCSE.
The topics covered will vary by exam board but here are some of the topics a student studying an AQA single science GCSE chemistry.
As chemistry covers matter, atomic structure is one of the main topics students will learn about during their GCSE. This includes atoms, elements, and compounds, mixtures, the periodic table and the groups in it, and transition metals.
They'll also learn about bonding, chemical structure, and the properties of matter. This topic includes the three states of matter, ionic compounds, small molecules, giant covalent molecules, metals and alloys, and nanoscience.
There's also quantitative chemistry which includes calculations, atom economy, percentage yield, and gas calculations. This is the part we were talking about earlier where you have to be good at maths!
Single science GCSE pupils cover chemical and energy changes and the rates of them, too. These topics include metal reactions, acids, alkalis, and salts, titrations, electrolysis, exothermic and endothermic reaction, and chemical cells.
Students are expected to have an understanding of some organic chemistry fundamentals, chemical analysis, and the chemistry of the atmosphere.
In short, there's a lot to cover!
If you need help with chemistry (and it wouldn't be surprising if you did with so much to learn about), an online chemistry tutor could help an awful lot.
Tutoring allows you to learn at your own pace and focus on the topics you need to study. While the teaching at a school or university will try to generally try to ensure that all students reach the prerequisite level, a private online tutor only has you to worry about.
There's no shame in finding chemistry difficult; it's the study of all the matter in our universe! Online tutors are there to help and can teach any student from school (GCSE or A Level) to university and beyond.
If you've decided to get some help with your chemistry from an online tutor, just have a search for tutors on Superprof. You can see on a tutor's profile whether or not they offer online tutorials via webcam and since they don't usually have to travel to teach their online tutorials, they tend to charge less than face-to-face tutors.
Some even offer the first hour for free to try a few different ones out and see which is the best for you, your level, and how you like to learn! You can read reviews left by previous students, see whether they offer home or online tuition, compare how much they charge for tutoring, and how experienced they are teaching students of your level.
