Learn to play chess like a pro with private lessons

Not necessarily a huge choice amongst the youth of today, chess has gone through phases of being something 'geeky'. However, now that it is seen as somewhat cool to be clever, chess is coming back! And being really good at chess, well... that's going to really impress your mates! So if you are good at strategic mind gams and think you'll be ace at chess then that's something to celebrate and going to classes is a great way to nurture that skill so you can not only play it comfortably but get good at it.

Besides, why would you care even if it wasn't something cool to do? If you love it, then do your thing! Nothing else matters.

No matter how much of a natural you are, chess is not a game that is totally intuitive and easy to pick up for any novice. Everybody has to study the game of chess to a certain extent - you've got to learn the names of the pieces, understand the rules and strategies not to mention practise lots with an opponent to keep building and improving.

Chess classes are available in most cities across the UK for children and adults, even those with a rating of less than 1200 (which means they are novices, as you'll see below).

You can find out how the rating system works in our How To Play Chess section below.

Chess: Board Game or Sport?

Chess is, by definition, a board game as it is played on a board with two opponents. However, chess has also been recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a sport, and thus the game is technically an international competitive sport, with players from many countries participating in major chess tournaments and events.

That said, chess has just fallen shy of being regarded as an Olympic sport, so you won't see any medals being given out for this discipline at the next summer or winter Olympics. You might, however, be able to take part in a competition near where you are in Edinburgh.

How to Play Chess: The Basics

Chess is played on a square board comprising of 64 squares in an 8x8 grid formation. One player controls the 16 white pieces and the other the 16 black pieces, of which there are one king, one queen, two knights, two rooks, two bishops and eight pawns, and the objective is to checkmate the opponent's king. The game can end in several different ways, including in a draw.

On average, each game of chess lasts between 10 and 60 minutes. A rating system is used in chess to estimate the strength of each player based on their previous performance, which goes from below 1200 (novice) to over 2700 (super grandmaster).

The History of Chess in Cardiff

Here's a name you might have heard of before, but possibly not for the reason you should have. Sailor William Davies Evans is an influential figure in chess yet he has been overlooked for what he did for the sport. In Victorian times, he revitalised the game of chess and made it one of the most popular board games on the planet, with his surname going global.

The forgotten hero first learned the game of chess when he was 28, so quite a late starter to the sport. He went from an amateur to an expert in just a few short years. After experimenting with a new opening, it became widely known as the Evans Gambit. Sadly, however, Evans died a poor man in exile and was quickly forgotten by his countrymen.
