What Is Accent Reduction?

Have you ever noticed how BBC presenters all seem to speak the same way? For that matter, so do presenters on ITV and other outlets, and how come actors all speak the same way, too? That phenomenon is even odder when you consider that England alone is home to more than 30 regional dialects. Are television and radio personalities, and all the actors were chosen from just one of those areas?

In fact, much like countries around the world, presenters in the UK are required to deliver the news or whatever material they present in Received Pronunciation, a region-neutral accent. Often, to master that particular speech pattern, prospective journalists and television personalities take lessons to tone down their regional accents.

And its' not uncommon for actors and public speakers to take lessons in diction with a voice coach, either.

At its simplest, accent reduction entails training your speaking apparatus - voice box, tongue, jaw and lips, to move in such a way that removes any identifying regional markers from your spoken language.

If you've read George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion or seen the stage play (or film) My Fair Lady derived from that written work, you have an idea of what accent reduction is all about. In that story, a young Cockney girl is trained out of her thick accent and taught how to speak like a lady suited to life at the highest levels of polite society.

Today's accent reduction lessons do not involve shoving marbles into your face and trying to speak clearly around them or hours-long repetition of phonetics - if they ever did. Demosthenes might argue our scepticism but the fact remains that reducing your native accent is not as hard as you might think.

Do Bradfordians Need to Reduce Their Accents?

Bradford's local dialect is colourful, to say the least. For example, while the rest of England might be gutted over something bad happening, only in Bradford would someone say they are sluffened, or maybe even sloughed over some minor tragedy.

It's not just Bradford's vocabulary that makes native Bradfordians hard to understand, it's the way they speak. Outside of Bradford, only the most enlightened linguists would understand ‘Things that as to do to keep band int nick’, a local idiom that translates to 'The things you have to do to keep things running smoothly".

If you never leave Bradford, either physically or virtually, you probably don't need to worry about losing all of those wonderful phrases you've heard all your life. However, if you want to be a teacher, public speaker or social media influencer, you'll have to smooth out your speech to be understood by anyone outside your community.

Indeed, if you plan on a career in teaching, learning Received Pronunciation is a job requirement. The same goes for working in a multinational company; you'll need your foreign counterparts, whose first language isn't English, to understand you.

Accent Reduction in Ethnic Communities

Around six years ago, The Guardian featured MP Naz Shah detailing how women in her constituency struggle with English, and how their poor language skills present barriers to full integration into English life. Though speakers of Urdu, MP Shah's second language, are of great concern to her, Bradford and West Yorkshire in general are home to speakers of many languages: Polish, Czech and Hungarian among them.

Those languages in particular tend to have a harsh, guttural tone to them; qualities that are distinct from English's Received Pronunciation. Thus, many speakers of foreign languages take their English language learning a few steps further by seeking out accent reduction lessons.

Finding Accent Reduction Lessons

Fortunately, neither ESOL students nor native Bradfordians need to look very far to find accent reduction lessons. In fact, they don't even have to leave their homes, they can simply search for the accent reduction coach who best meets their needs on Superprof.

Whether your native language is Arabic, Italian, Spanish or Bradfordian, Superprof accent reduction coaches can help you smooth out your spoken English tones by teaching you how to move your mouth as you speak difficult English sounds such as 'th' or 'r'. Also, they will teach you how to stress words correctly, to make yourself better understood.
