In many ways, Coventry is a usual town. Historically a centre for industry, it suffered the most Second World War ravages outside of London, Plymouth and Hull. Plans to rebuild included an extensive pedestrian shopping mall, at the time the largest of its kind in all of Europe.
Today, little pre-war architecture remains; the bombing was too severe. However, nobody could fault the government's reconstruction plans; Coventry is a lovely city, full of distinctive features - not just architectural ones, either.
Unlike many UK cities, fully one-third of Coventry's population is made up of ethnic minorities. Sikh, Hindu and South Asian communities thrive in Coventry, particularly in St Michaels and Foleshill areas. Indeed, Coventry nearly matches London in its ethnic population percentage.
And, while Coventry can't hold a candle to our capital city's foreign student university population simply because London has more schools, it nevertheless welcomes thousands of students from abroad each year to study in its three institutes of higher learning.
Coventry's warm embrace of diverse populations no doubt contributed to that city being named the UK City of Culture in 2021.
With sizable Chinese, Pakistani and Caribbean populations among others thriving in Coventry, you might wonder how these distinct-sounding language speakers make themselves understood. Besides, their arduous efforts at learning how to speak English, many of them work on reducing their native accent.
Chinese is a tonal language. Syllables are 'toned' to give them meaning but Mandarin doesn't demand any syllable or sentence stress; facets of spoken English that make the language understandable. Indeed, many Mandarin speakers do not inflect their speech at all, which makes it very hard for them to make themselves understood.
Urdu and Caribbean languages have a lilting quality that, like Mandarin, can make words spoken in English with those accents difficult to understand. Thus it's common for speakers of other languages to seek out accent reduction lessons in Coventry but these demographics are not the only groups to polish up their language skills.
Leaving nearly all of its industrial roots in the past, this city offers its inhabitants a diverse menu of radio and television fare, as well as print and digital media centred around Coventry life.
Native Coventrians have a linguistic dilemma. Caught as they are between so-called Northern and Southern dialects, the Coventry dialect is a mix between Estuary English and the sounds more commonly heard in Birmingham. Any Coventrian aiming for a role in their city's rich broadcast media environment would have to tamp their native speech patterns down before they take their place in front of the camera.
Also, any Coventry native planning to work for Peugeot, the French carmaker who is one of the city's few remaining auto factories would likely need to standardise their English speech so they could be understood by their English-speaking international counterparts.
Whether you want to work in the city's burgeoning finance sector or aerospace industry, you will have to speak using Received Pronunciation, what is known as Great Britain's standard dialect. That applies to both native Coventrians and those inhabitants who are speakers of other languages.
For students and the newly arrived from abroad, reducing their native accent as they improve their English language skills will help them establish themselves in their new home or school.
Often, ESOL courses focus more on teaching vocabulary and grammar; working on accent-neutral pronunciation is usually left up to the learners. For these learners and native Coventrians who wish to shed their accents, Superprof's accent reduction coaches present the ideal solution.
