Regardless of your age, level or ambitions, a tutor can help you to advance forward in the world of Accounting thanks to their expert knowledge of the subject and also the different certifications and accreditations you could be about to complete.
What's more, contacts in accounting firms can be great when it comes to entering such a competitive market, and although Cardiff is a big city there are only so many firms to work at in the area if you want to be a part of a big corporation. And don't be put off the idea of working in your home town for the rest of your life, being appointed in an advanced role in the city opens you up to many opportunities across the rest of the United Kingdom and beyond as well.
Expert studies have shown that numbers of accountancy professionals are increasing steadily, with the membership of accountancy bodies growing on average 0.5% year on year (based on 2014 to 2018 figures). But there are also just under 165,000 students seeking to enter the profession and add to these membership figures, a number which is increasing annually too.
So, why all the interest in working in accountancy?
Accountants play a vital role in every single business whether large or small since every firm needs an accountant or a finance department. What's more, though, they advise and carry out tasks for individuals when it comes to their taxes.
Accountants might work in a number of areas including auditing and management, taxation, forensic accounting, corporate finance, sales and acquisition or debt recovery. Some might find themselves working within the finance department of a company while others may independently deal with their own clients as part of an accountancy firm.
If you work as a tax accountant, you may find that your work life and environment vary much throughout the year. Some days may be quite slow, while others during a different season could be rather manic. This is all part of the thrill and is the same for many professions, keeping the day-to-day work interesting and engaging. For example, working in a tax environment means that you could find it quite busy when the deadline for tax returns is coming up.
We've seen proof that the industry is continuing to grow decade by decade, so you might expect there to be an ongoing demand for accountants, making this a secure and sensible profession to enter. Every business or a sole trader needs an accountant, but there's also quite a bit of competition and those who have already established a reputation in Cardiff may win more clients unless you can offer something more or better service. This is when additional training could help you pip them to the post.
There's also room for progression in this career with many accountancy firms hiring juniors who work their way up the salary scale.
A poll suggested that the average salary in 2018 for accountants from part-qualified level up to senior levels was £62,042, but you could potentially earn more within just a few years if you started up your own business. If you worked for yourself in this way, you might save yourself lots of money on travel to busy locations but there are many benefits to being employed by a firm too such as holiday and sick pay and a decent redundancy package.
As we've mentioned, accountants tend to be very good with their money, which comes with their training on how to manage finances so you'll no doubt found ways to make your money go further wherever you choose to work!
To become a chartered accountant, you must train in the relevant areas prior to qualifying but entries are accepted from a wide range of disciplines, so it's a career that you can turn to with minimal study time so long as you have a somewhat relevant background. You can study with or without a degree, but the higher your level of qualification then the more attractive you'll be to employers. Starting out with responsibility is going to allow you to move forward quicker, rather than having to work your way up from a very basic entry-level position.
You can also gain certificates in Finance or Accounting and Business (CFAB) to boost your employability as an undergraduate.
There are three institutes of chartered accountants in the UK: ICAEW, ICAS and Chartered Accountants Ireland (oversees both Ireland and Northern Ireland).
Cardiff University offers a number of Accounting programmes, including a BSc, which can be studied full-time across three years. Alternatively, you may choose a course at Cardiff Business School to suit your needs, with full degree courses also being offered on a range of accounting and finance subjects.
Of course, Cardiff isn't the only place where you can study Accounting, so you could enrol on a course across the country and have a tutor waiting for you at home to help you out with your studies during the holidays.
There is no shortage of Accountancy firms in the UK, and Cardiff is no different.
We've already mentioned that you can become a self-employed accountant once you reach the right level of expertise and gain the correct qualifications, but you can also join a firm where you can continue to learn from others. Of course, all accountants must legally be a part of an accounting body too.
Using a simple Google search, you will find Cardiff-based Accounting firms such as Advantage Accounting & Advisory Ltd, a firm of chartered certified accountants, and Haines Watts Cardiff, a leading firm of accountants, taxation and business advisors.
At Superprof, you'll find just short of a dozen private tutors offering tuition in accounting and finance in the Cardiff area. You can learn accounting online or in person, and benefit from a free first lesson in order to assess if you've made the right decision.
Use our online directory to filter your results by price, by qualifications, by experience, by expertise, by chartered accounting status or institute and so on... you are sure to find the best tutor for you!
If you are unsure of anything, you can read reviews from students who have already got ahead with their accounting studies.
