There's something wonderful about the theatre, film, television, and the performing arts that draws people in. A lot of people in Sheffield are interested in the performing arts but don't know where to get started or how they can study it.
Almost every famous actor will have studied acting either in school, with a private tutor, or in a drama school, so with that in mind, let's look at why you should study acting, the challenges you'll face, what you can learn about it in school, how private tutoring can help, and how to find private tutors in Sheffield and South Yorkshire.
While you probably think that most great actors just have an innate talent for acting, they were probably acting students at some point in their life. Even if they didn't study formally at a drama school or with an acting coach or tutor, they probably regularly work on their performing arts skills and you should, too.
There are a lot of benefits to studying acting and the performing arts. Firstly, you'll have a better understanding of how it all works, how you can use your training and acting skills to create better and more convincing and entertaining performances.
As for skills, there are a lot of skills you mightn't have that you need to learn for a role. For example, your part may require dance skills or a convincing accent. The actors that regularly try to improve their professional performance through training and education are usually those who land the best roles.
As you probably already know, landing roles in film, theatre, television, or musicals isn't easy. Acting is one of those careers where there are far more people wanting to do it than there are roles available. The life of an aspiring actor isn't easy and while classes and lessons can improve your performance, you still have a few challenges to overcome.
Becoming a professional actor is probably the first big step you'll have to take. You need to be skilled, prepared, and, in many cases, very lucky. Every actor needs to perform consistently well and ensure that their name is out there when casting directors are looking to fill roles.
Once you land the role and become a professional actor, you need to make sure that every performance is good. If you're on stage, you'll need to get it right the first time during every show. If you're working in film or television, you'll want to deliver good performances and be a pleasure to work with. Directors won't want you back if your performances are poor and you're a nightmare to work with. Only the very best actors are forgiven for a lack of professional decorum because their performances are that good.
Being a professional actor requires thick skin, too. Your performances won't be to everyone's liking and you need to take constructive criticism on board but also ensure that you learn from it to improve your next performance. Of course, sometimes you'll get conflicting feedback and you'll have to attempt to decipher which advice to follow.
If you're interested in the theatre, acting, or the performing arts, you can study it in school. The English Literature GCSE covers a bit of drama and theatre but for those passionate about it, you'll want to study a dedicated GCSE Drama course.
A few different exam boards offer a GCSE in Drama, but we'll just look at topics covered on the AQA qualification as an example. The curriculum will vary slightly but most of these topics will be covered in every Drama GCSE.
Students will learn how a theatre production is put together and about theatre roles, characteristics of dramatic works, staging, and stage positioning. They'll also learn about set design, costume design, lighting design, sound design, and puppet design.
In terms of performance, there are two parts to most performances: your voice and your body. Students studying a Drama GCSE will learn about the physical skills for interpreting characters and using their voice to interpret characters. They'll also spend time working on the theory behind performances such as genre, performance styles, rehearsing, refining, designing productions, and health and safety during theatrical performances.
After GCSE, students can also study an A Level in Drama and take their passion for drama to university. Generally, GCSE is the first opportunity to see whether or not drama as a school subject is for them. Of course, they can also study drama and the performing arts outside of school in a dedicated drama school or private classes with a tutor or acting coach.
If you need help with your acting or are interested in acting classes, private acting tutors are probably your best option. There are so many skills to learn and concepts to understand that your typical acting class won't cover exactly what you need to know. With private tutors or teachers at home, you can work on the exact skills you want or need for your next role.
If you've landed a role in a musical, you might want to work on your singing or rehearse the dance steps with a private tutor. There are plenty of tutors with experience teaching both aspiring and professional actors all over the country.
If you've decided that private acting classes are the best option for you, then you can search for a drama teacher or coach in Sheffield or South Yorkshire. On Superprof, you can view each tutor's profile, see how much they charge, and whether or not they offer the first lesson for free. Use these free lessons to try different tutors out. Every tutor is different and you want to ensure that you're working with the best one for you, your preferred learning style, and budget.
If you can't find any local tutors, don't forget that you can also find online acting tutors to teach you via webcam!
