Excel in GCSE German with the help of a native speaker

Around 35,000 students annually choose to study German in school, as well as plenty of other people looking for German tutors to help them with their language skills elsewhere. German is one of the most useful second languages, especially when it comes to career, and this means that there is always an appetite for German lessons.

Whether you are already studying languages or you have ambitions of adding German to your repertoire, there are a lot of different options.

Challenges of Learning German

Learning German as an English speaker is not necessarily easy. There are a lot of differences in the languages, more so than some other languages.

Learning German as an English speaker presents several challenges due to differences in language structure, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

One significant challenge is the grammatical complexity of German compared to English. German has three genders (masculine, feminine, neuter), four cases (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive), and a more intricate system of word endings and declensions.

English speakers accustomed to a simpler grammatical structure may find mastering German grammar daunting and require significant time and effort to grasp its nuances.

Another challenge is the differences in vocabulary between English and German. While English and German share some words, many words have different meanings or usage conventions in each language.

English speakers must learn new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions specific to German, expanding their lexical knowledge to communicate effectively. Additionally, German compound words, known for their length and complexity, can pose challenges in understanding and memorization.

Pronunciation is another hurdle for English speakers learning German. German pronunciation rules differ from English, and the sounds of certain letters and letter combinations may be unfamiliar or difficult to produce. The presence of guttural sounds such as "ch" (as in "Bach") and the umlauted vowels (ä, ö, ü) can be particularly challenging for English speakers to master, requiring practice and repetition to achieve accurate pronunciation.

Many of us have seen that German words can be a little confusing, and building your vocabulary might be something of a challenge. German words can be fun, too, and there are terms for things we don’t have words for in the UK, which is why some words like schadenfreude (pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune) have made their way into English.

Other fun words include Fingerspitzengefühl which translates to fingertip feeling, and Dreikäsehoch which means three cheeses high and is usually a way to refer to kids by their height!
